WHY WOULD YOU WATCH THE LODGE?
I can be backed up with this, not even a week ago I was very against watching The Lodge even though Thomas Doherty was in it - this had been because I had seen the very poorly acted stair fall scene and I wasn’t all that excited for the love triangle. Knowing Thomas Doherty was in it wasn’t exactly enough for me but I decided to give it a try after finding out that Jade Alleyne (who I was aware of through The 4 O’Clock Club) was in it I decided to give it a chance. Now, less than a week later, I’m actually in love with all of the characters and I just want to protect them all.
Skye: Fifteen year old girl who begins running her own lodge, the power this girl has put herself in! She’s super adorable and tries to be friendly to everyone. She always keeps in touch with her best friend even though he’s miles away. And she also has to put up with two boys trying to win her love, all the while making sure The Lodge continues to do well.
Sean: Rich kid bike enthusiast. Pretty face, and he’s Scottish. He literally almost kills himself, Skye, and her dead within the first five minutes of the pilot episode - that’s barely even an exaggeration. Will basically put his best friend Ben before everything, he just wants his friend to be happy and he doesn’t want to end up fighting over a girl.
Ben: Grumpy af to begin with, but only because he doesn’t want Skye and her dad to sell the Lodge. Fake dating trope with Skye, just to save her from Danielle. Actually super adorable, I went through a day long phase of hating him but then I loved him again. Kinda problematic, forces Skye to choose between him and Sean. Also a bike enthusiast but he knows Sean is almost always better than him.
Kaylee: Actual ray of sunshine? Aims to be a musician and she doesn’t let anything stop her from pursuing that. She’s liked Noah for quite a while but he doesn’t know that. She’s a really wonderful person and I love her.
Noah: Also a ray of sunshine!! Beautiful person. Dedicates a lot of time to helping Kaylee with her music because he just so happens to have a crush on her, but she has no clue! Basically always has headphones around his neck because music takes up that much time in his life. Wants Kaylee to pursue her dream, but also wants Kaylee.
Danielle: Honestly, I love her. She’s the ‘bitch goes kind of good’ character, starting off as Sean’s envious girlfriend and also the possible focus of a reality show (which then ends up focusing on The Lodge). Has some great reprises of the songs. Doesn’t like dirt.
Josh: OPENLY GAY DISNEY CHARACTER! Okay, so literally with Josh, I thought it was going to be one of the characters that you know is gay (Ryan Evans) but nothing is actually done about it, so I was very pleasantly surprised that Josh’s sexuality is acknowledged in the show! And accepted instantly! I actually cried when I found out about the scene. Gossip queen. Starts his own live show centered around the lodge. Another ray of sunshine. Mostly seen through Skye’s phone scene but sometimes he shows up in person!! Probably the best best friend you could get.
Oz: I felt like I had to include him here because I hate him and I don’t know why.
I know what you’re all dreading: THE LOVE TRIANGLE
Skye, Sean, and Ben. I wasn’t crazy about it either, there are some problematic character moments in this plot but I actually really like that Ben and Sean do stay friends for a majority of their time competing over Skye. Even after the choice is made, the chosen one wants to make sure that the other is okay with it before pursuing the relationship.
And myself and others have pointed out many times that it does have some very poly vibes to it. The music video for Favourite Place To Be is a very poly take on the triangle. There’s also a couple of other moments that I like to joke about it being a poly relationship, and it’s a beautiful thing to imagine. Although, this is Disney, having an openly gay character is probably enough for them. That doesn’t stop the poly fanfiction though ;)
Disney only showed the first season in the U.S. Is there any more than that?
