Image 2: tags from @glitterarygetsit reading: Time for the story of the best thing I’ve ever found on a dig. It was a piece of bone with grooves filed into it, early medieval - 9th c or so. Clearly it had been intended to become a comb, but it had snapped while being made: a crack ran down from one of the grooves. So I knew that the last person to touch this bone - before it lay there for a thousand years or so - the very last thing they’d done with it was go “ah fuck” and throw it to the ground in frustration, and the next person to pick it up was me. I’ve never felt as connected to anyone from the past as I did to this northumbrian comb-maker. People have always been people. Archaeology, it’s a bit like time-travel.

Image 3: tags reading: in Rome I found a stylus that a supervisor had dropped two thousand years ago while overseeing the leveling of an old building to lay the foundations for a new one on top. Did he notice? Did it not matter enough to him to pick it back up? Did he go to grab his stylus later that day and curse when he realized it was missing? It’s such an insanely visceral connection to the past.
