30 Days of Art Improvement Challenge

Are you tired of feeling like your art just isn’t improving? Do you want to do a 30-day challenge that’s actually useful? Welcome to 30 Days of Improvement Hell. >:D

I made this because I’ve been feeling super ‘blah’ about my art these days, and I needed something to kick-start myself. Who wants to do this with me!? Start now or whenever you can (now you procrastinators!). Challenge yourself and have fun at the same time!

Tag your posts with #Improvement Hell so everyone can follow along and see each other’s awesome artwork. I may even create a blog and reblog them! :D

What are you waiting for? START!

  1. Self-Portrait - Introduce yourself
  2. Draw a figure using a reference - link to reference
  3. Draw a figure that’s in action, using a reference - link to reference
  4. Draw a part of the human anatomy you have trouble with. x20, with atleast 5 being skeletal/musculature studies.
  5. Draw more figures. Quick gestures and silhouettes. x20, with atleast 10 different body shapes
  6. Let’s have some fun. Design a character from either This or This character generator! Be creative and bring something to life!
  7. Pick the weirdest object in your house/room. Draw it. Shadows and Highlights.
  8. Find 2-3 objects, make a scene with them. Draw it. Bonus points for creativity. Double points for dramatic lighting.
  9. Draw a landscape of a place you’ve never been or drawn.
  10. Draw a BG with 1pt Perspective. Negative points if it’s a railroad or an empty street.
  11. Draw a BG with 2pt Perspective.
  12. Look out a window. Draw what you see. Bonus points for adding something interesting.
  13. Draw an interior setting with the character you designed on Day #6 in it.
  14. BG with either bird’s eye or worm’s eye view.
  15. Halfway there! Draw three 'action’ scenes with different compositions in each. Quick sketches are fine, just make them interesting and understandable! Bonus points if it’s the same scene, but different composition.
  16. Draw a single page comic with 5-7 panels (the story begins and ends on one page).
  17. Draw an animal you’ve never drawn before. x10  Link references.
  18. Draw a car. Negative points for whining. Hint: Use a perspective grid.
  19. Think of the thing you hate drawing the most. Guess what? Draw it! Negative points for lying to yourself.
  20. Pick an object in your house/room. Now design a character from it, using the shapes, forms, textures, purpose and colors as inspiration. Also link/post the object you used. Negative points for using a humanoid action figure.
  21. Draw a character/object/scene, and shade them using ONLY solid blacks and whites. Bonus points for good use of lights/shadows
  22. Draw a different object/scene/character. Shade using hatching, crosshatcing, and/or pointillism. Bonus points for lights/shadows and textures.
  23. Colors! Pick a color palette, and paint a scene/character/object using only those colors (some blending allowed). Bonus points for good use of lights/shadows.
  24. Draw and color a scene/object/character - no lines allowed! (aka - lineless art). Don’t forget light and shadows!

  26. Draw a character. Draw 10 emotions/expressions. Bonus points for 'uncommon’ emotions. (i.e. anxiety, guilt, despair, loneliness etc.)
  27. Draw three random shapes using your opposite hand (or your foot). Now design characters from those shapes.
  28. Turn on the tv (or load your illegally downloaded movies). Pick an actor and draw them.
  29. Almost done! Let’s have some fun. Draw some fanart. Bonus points if it’s super obscure and unknown. Make people guess what it’s from.
  30. Last day! Find a drawing you did within the last year. Now draw it again using what you’ve learned! Link it for comparison!

Look at all that amazing improvement! Congrats!

[Update] There is now a sequel challenge, Draw All The Things!

A compilation of stuff I know about drawing Asian faces and Asian culture! I feel like many “How-To-Draw” tutorials often default to European faces and are not really helpful when drawing people of other races. So I thought I’d put this together in case anyone is interested! Feel free to share this guide and shoot me questions if you have any! I’m by no means an expert, I just know a few things from drawing experience and from my own cultural background.

hey! your art is so lovely! you're really good at drawing diverse characters!! do you have any tips on drawing chubby characters?

ahh thank you so much!! ;u;

ok i’m no expert and to be quite honest i don’t even know what i’m doing most of the time BUT i’ll give u some tips based on how i draw + what i know from being a chubby person myself lol

first of all: think circles

snowmen!!! the first one’s body is made up of 2 circles of the same size, indicating the chest and hips are gonna be the about the same size (an hourglass shape), while the one on the right has a smaller top and is gonna be a pear shape!!

now let’s sketch over these snowmen, keeping circles and soft shapes in mind the whole time!

and finally….

note the tummy rolls where the circles overlap!! fat will squish and bend all over the place, so if a person is stretching there won’t be tummy rolls, but when relaxing, the fat will roll up.

important to keep in mind: fat distribution varies a lot from person to person!! i reccommend googling nude fat people (not just plus models!!!) and studying how the fat is stored on people’s bodies and how it will move with the person!! (and if you happen to be a chubby person yourself, don’t be afraid to use a mirror!!)

fat people come in all shapes and sizes, so i couldn’t even BEGIN to try and draw every body shape there is!! so again, google is your friend. that said, here’s a few more snowmen turning into people:

the body isn’t the only thing to keep in mind, of course; the face is also super important!! a nice trick is to simply put less definition on the jawline; fat covers up bone structure!!

i just erased some lines and BOOM!! also, make the face rounder and fuller for those cute pinchable chubby cheeks!!

and of course, don’t forget about double chins!!

a lot of fat is stored around the neck so not only will you get double chins, but the back of the neck will also be chubby!! that’s a good thing to keep in mind when drawing short-haired or bald chubby people

another important detail: the arms!

fat mostly tends to gather in the upper arms but depending on the person the rest of the arm can also be noticeably chubby (for example, there will be less bone definiton around the wrist.) take note of the armpit area, where you’ll get folds!!

now for something i think is super important!!! stretchmarks!!

honestly, i think it’s so sad that there’s so much stigma around stretchmarks, because i think they’re wonderful!! they look like lightning bolts, or tiger stripes!!!

that said, stretchmarks are scars, so fresh marks will be reddish while older marks will fade and usually become a lighter tone than your skintone. they’ll appear wherever the skin stretches when you grow or gain weight, but here are the most common places to see them:

  • the upper arms
  • the chest/breasts
  • the underside of the tummy
  • the waist
  • the thighs (both inside and outside)
  • the butt

ok, i think that’s about it for tips i have to offer!! i’ll just repeat the most important tip of them all: don’t be afraid to google references!! references are your friend, it’s not cheating, every artist uses them and you will learn SO MUCH from them, trust me!!! and of course, practice practice PRACTICE!! figuring out how to draw different body types in your own style, especially if you’re used to drawing slimmer/skinnier people (and let’s face it, a lot of us started out drawing just one body type) takes time and practice, so just keep drawing!! :D

So you might be saying: Lion why a guide on drawing black people? Well young blood it’s because a lot of people cant…seem…to draw…black people..Amazing I know.

Racist (caricatures) portrayals of black people have been around forever, and to this day people can’t seem to draw black people like they are human. If your artwork resembles any of the above even remotely your artwork is racist and offensive. If you try to excuse that as a stylistic choice you’re not only a terrible artist, but racist too!!! Congrats.

Whitewashing is also a problem. A lot of people refuse to draw black features on canonly black characters. While this example isn’t colored, lightening the skin-tone of a character is also considered whitewashing. So lets start with features!

Now all black people have different noses thats a no-brainer, but black noses tend to have flatter bridges, and wider nostrils. Please stay from triangular anime noses and small button noses. Your drawings should not depict black people with abnormally large noses. (Especially if you do not draw other characters this way)

If you feel like the way you draw lips on black characters is offensive or resembles a caricature,it probably does and you should change it. ABSOLUTELY AVOID PLACING LIPS AT THE BOTTOM OF THE FACE.

Hair is so diverse! Please get used to drawing braids, locs, kinks and coils! If you can learn to draw ringlets and long waves you can learn how to draw black hairstyles.

Add clips! Learn how to draw baby-hairs and never be afraid to add color Pinterest and Google are free my dudes! Also try using square brushes for blocking in coils.

OK THAT’S ALL YOU GUYS

Gross porn blogs:

What is it about my page that entices you? I’m not interested! Get lost!

undead-trans-lesbian

Let’s say someone is looking for porn and they put “wife caught her husband cheating,” into Google. There are a lot of porn sites (and some news sites) with that title. So Google has to decide which order to show them in, because most of the time, people pick something off the first few pages of Google.

Google wants to have the very best “wife caught her husband cheating” (or whatever else you search for) sites on the first page of the search. Google has several ways to try and decide which site are the best, but one of them is that it looks at how popular it is by seeing how many other websites link to it. If a lot of other sites are linking to it, it was probably useful to them, so Google will put it on the front page.

So if I’m a sleazy pornsite owner, I could create like a thousand websites and make them all link to my “wife caught her husband cheating” site, and act like a whole bunch of different websites thought it was pretty great. They’d be like “xdfgt .com”, “xdfgy .com”, “xdfgh .com,” just nonsense addresses nobody else was using, or whatever. I’d try to make Google think my site was awesome, because all these other websites are linking to it.

But Google has already caught on to that. Google would know “xdfgt .com” was a crappy fake website, because nobody else is linking to “xdfgt .com”. Any website that is only linked to by crap websites is also crap, as far as Google is concerned. Google won’t put it on the first pages of search results.

So instead let’s imagine the sleazy pornsite owner creates a thousand fake tumblrs instead, like “xdfgt.tumblr .com” and “xdfgy.tumblr .com” and “xdfgh.tumblr .com” and just puts one or two posts on them to add links to the “wife caught her husband cheating” porn site. Google can still tell those tumblrs are crap websites, because nobody else is linking to them. But the difference is … on tumblr, the sleazy pornsite owner can make your website link to him.

Let’s say your tumblr is “mostlyaestheticandfunny.tumblr .com”. If “xdfgt.tumblr .com” likes one of your posts, there’s link on your blog to “xdfgt.tumblr .com.” Somewhere on “mostlyaestheticandfunny.tumblr .com” it will say “xdfgt liked this” with a link from your blog to “xdfgt.tumblr .com.”

Google’s bot looks at “mostlyaestheticandfunny.tumblr .com” and it sees that your blog is a good website. People are linking to it (talking to you or reblogging from you), you write like an actual human being, you have nice pictures, you update sometimes, you aren’t a bot. So Google decides your blog isn’t a crappy scam website. Then it sees the link to “xdfgt.tumblr .com” and it thinks “oh hey, a nice website with good stuff written by a real human linked to this “xdfgt.tumblr .com” I guess maybe “xdfgt.tumblr .com” is a decent website too.”

Then it looks at “xdfgt.tumblr .com” and it sees the link to the porn site with “wife caught her husband cheating”, and it says, “well, I guess that “wife caught her husband cheating” site is a good site. I know that because there’s a good site linking to it here at “xdfgt.tumblr .com.” I know “xdfgt.tumblr .com” is a good site because “mostlyaestheticandfunny.tumblr .com” linked to it, and I know “mostlyaestheticandfunny.tumblr .com” is a good site because it is updated and writes like a real person and people talk to it and link to it.”

So basically the porn bots are using the fact that you have a good blog to make themselves look better and to try and trick Google’s bot into thinking they’re very popular and it should put them at the top of its list when people search Google for porn.

It’s really annoying! It would be really nice if the people running tumblr figured out a way to not be free advertising for every sleazy porn site on the internet

hey wow thats actually really useful! and its written in a way that i (a bird with no knowledge of the wizardly internal workings of a website) can understand!

FINALLY AN EXPLANATION

Avatar

So... I technically drew this 3 years ago but forgot to post it. I think I was going to clean up the end and make a nice recap, but I ran out of steam and then just left it as a wip for years. I got reminded of it because I was talking to a friend about how to draw wheelchairs today.

This covers most of what I view as the most common errors when it comes to drawing characters who use manual wheelchairs. I hope it helps you a lot.

Image description is in alt text, but there is a back up image description under the cut in case that does not work for some reason

For the record, anyone who engage in the ai art discourse by quoting picassos “great artists steal” will be immediately disqualified from the disco horse.

1: picasso is dead and irrelevant. He was extremely sexist and talked about women as objects. Fuck him.

2: there is no such thing as a rule or law that every artist follow. Theres no fucking creed we are all taught the moment we picked up a pen. So quoting random ass dead artists doesnt add anything to the discussion because those quotes are just that one individuals personal opinion.

3: “great artists steal” is taken out of context only to justify whatever argument you’re defending. But the entire quote is in regards to how an artist use their references. Art is subjective - and artists use their references and inspiration in different ways. Words like “steal” or “copying” or “referencing” etc is part of a lingo that has its own nuanced meanings among art circles vs non artists. And the context matters a lot in those discussions. Artists have always argued with each other on what and how is morally acceptable when it comes to usage of references.

4: picasso def would be in favor of nft and ai art anyway so again, i dont give a fuck about what that dead fart has to say.

Im sorry WHAT

It is well documented that he brutalized his partners, 2 of them committed suicide because the serious physical and emotional abuse, while other 2 ended up with serious nervous breakdowns. One of them even was 17 when he groomed her, while he was 45.

The one that managed to escape him (with their 2 children) later wrote how he beated her constantly until she was unconscious, so she finally had to run away from him before he managed to kill her. After that, he bullied her professionally and made all efforts to curve down her artistic career while totally rejecting their children.
