Mort Weisinger, who oversaw the ingenious, innovative, immortal Silver Age Superman–and co-created 21st century TV heartthrob Oliver Queen–was born 100 years ago, on April 25, 1915.

The Seleucid rock sculpture of Herakles (Heracles) at Behistun, Iran, dated to approximately 148 BC. Despite the Greek iconography, this work is of a very provincial style.

Behistun must be a very interesting place! Pity.

The ancient Maya and Star Wars

The Mayan city-state and so called Mesoamerican superpower Tikal located today in northeastern Guatemala was used by George Lucas to represent the rebel planet in the original Star Wars. Depicted is Tikal’s central pyramid dating from the Mayan Classical period, which like all Mesoamerican buildings would have been originally brightly painted and feature  sculpture proclaiming the legitimacy of the ruling dynasty.
