good morning darling, i love you (he’s up early to prepare their date) [ID: This is a four-panels digital illustration of Edward and Stede from Our Flag Means Death. The scene takes place during a bright early morning, some time after they have reunited and made up. In this, Edward is asleep on their bed, sporting a short beard and shirtless, body turned towards the viewer. In the first 2 panels, only Stede’s hand is in the frame, gently brushing away a stray lock of hair from Ed’s face and caressing his cheek. In the third panel, Stede appears in the frame, dressed in his nightgown, yellow robe, and sporting a moustache. He leans over to kiss Ed on the cheek. Ed doesn’t wake, instead in the fourth panel he smiles dreamily in his sleep. Stede watches him with his own smile, completely besotted. /. End ID]
me: so anyway ed is like ‘oh fuck’ and swims back to the ship and the crew gets captured by the british. and the chain by fleetwood mac is playing and there’s this bit where ed and stede are on the floor beside each other and holy fuck stede’s like ‘you came back’ and ed’s like ‘never left’ and you’d think that was the end of it but THEN. and you’ll never believe this. ed touches stede’s foot with his foot and stede- god sorry i can’t even talk about it without crying give me a minute
everybody else in the weekly team meeting at work: 👁 👄 👁
Do we think this is more of a spat or a rupture with Blackbeard? I think it’s done.
hey -- have we considered that maybe Ed reserved a scrap of his red silk for the heart on his Blackbeard flag?
-- like his heart was cut out and he wants to scream it to the world
what if... what if ed cut his heart silk in two (or maybe had frenchie cut it apart) the same way alma cut stede's orange in half? what if the scrap we see ed let go of in ep 10 is just half of his heart, and the other half is bleeding from blackbeard's flag? what then??
Heartened by the response to my costuming meta, I'm going to write something bossier about a pet peeve of mine that will make all of my new followers leave.
I am always, always seeing descriptions of Ed and Stede unlacing their or each other's pants/breeches and I am here today to tell you that that doesn't make sense.
We don't often get to see the tops of Ed's leather pants or Stede's breeches, but when we do, we see what's called a "fall front".
(I haven't come across a good screencap yet showing this on Stede's breeches, but it's there. We don't see it a lot because his waistcoats cover it, but when he's just in a shirt and breeches, like the "run me through" scene, it's visible.)
In Actual 1717, breeches tended to have a buttoning front fly like you'd find on a vintage pair of jeans. Waistcoats were generally about knee-length and fully covered the breeches, as you can see in my earlier post about fashion of the period. As a result, it didn't really matter how clothes looked at the crotch.
In the second half of the century, men's clothes got tighter and more body-conscious, waistcoats being made shorter and coats with cutaway skirts. Tailors likely developed the fall front in response to the fastening of the breeches being suddenly on display - it smooths everything out and hides some of the buttons. Here's a terrible old b&w photo showing how it works:
So they button at the waist, and then the flap (the "fall") comes up and buttons over the bottom of the waistband. No laces necessary!
I would argue that it's even sexier than laces, too, tbh.
Ed and Stede get shipwrecked, oh no~
Sexual themes
In light of it still having less than 200 views, I just need everyone to know this video straight up rerouted my brain and significantly influenced how I view Stede as a character 🫠

Beep boop! I look for accidental haiku posts. Sometimes I mess up.
and what about you, little haiku bot? do you feel kinship with your brethren? do you understand them? they speak words of enticement and seek love, but are met with disdain. you only parrot the words that cross your screen, but we all love you. or rather, since all you do is reflect us, maybe we simply love ourselves through you.
do you understand them, do you wish you could speak to us like they do? if you found your own voice, would we still care for you?
My voice repeats what
you all say: I love you I
love you I love you.

This. This is the first time. The only time. That it was not an echo. It was not found. Oh god.

Do you write in order?
i write in whatever order the visions come to me and fill in all the gaps afterwards. very occasionally the visions do just come to me in order and i’ll write them like that, but most of the time i’ll get a middle or an ending or a three-quarters-of-the-way-through first.
How fully formed does your writing come out the first try?
fairly well-formed, if a bit plain at times. but that’s fine, first draft is just for getting the thing itself to exist, then the editing passes are for adding the seasonings and spices and garnishes.
How many drafts do you go through?
i’ll generally do a first draft (just get it all written, ignore awkward word combos, sentences that don’t quite get the idea across, maybe even leave in a couple placeholder [HE SAYS SOMETHING SEXY HERE] things), then a major editing pass (fill in the placeholders, smooth out the jarring transitions, pick some better words, add cool stuff i thought of after the first draft), then a minor editing pass (add and then remove and then re-add a semi-colon ten times). sometimes individual chapters will have five million passes depending on how much trouble they gave me.
Tell me about your process.
i pretty much always start with an outline these days, but an outline can be anything from a detailed chapter-by-chapter breakdown of scenes and motivations and goals, to a short garbled paragraph which is basically just like “ommmgggg and then they do this lol wow i am a genius”. once i’ve written the outline it needs to marinate anywhere from a couple weeks to several years before i start actually doing stuff with it.
at any given time i’ve got several different fics microwaving in my head and i’ll kinda pick away at all of them as ideas come to me. it’s not unusual at all for me to jump back and forth between a few different docs in the same session and add a line to this one, a short conversation to that one, a vibe to the other one. once i’ve done enough of this picking and i also know what shape i want the fic to have (the shape will just spontaneously occur to me at some point in the outlining, marinating, or picking stages), my brain will shift into I Am Writing This mode and then i’ll just focus on one fic and write that to completion (or as far as i can get anyway).
right now i’ve got 18 fic ideas outlined. of those, 15 are marinating, and 3 i’m picking at. 1 of them did briefly shift into I Am Writing This territory but i lost steam before i could finish it and now it’s back in the picking stage. i think i’ll get it done soon(ish) tho. there’s a bunch that i wish were in the picking stage already because i really want to do stuff with them, but i can just feel in my soul that they’re not done marinating yet.
so all this is to say that my process is entirely vibes-based and there’s no real rhyme or reason to it. fun!
