A government investigation uncovered 34,000 cases where Wells Fargo charged Black and Hispanic borrowers higher fees and rates on mortgages compared to their white counterparts .
Black and Hispanic homeowners were given more expensive mortgages and when they could not keep up with payments, the banks refused to refinance mortgages on terms equal to white borrowers.
In 2015, M&T Bank, the nation’s 17th-largest bank, came under fire for discriminating against Black, Hispanic and Asian borrowers by giving white borrowers with lesser qualifications higher loan amounts.
The 2015 lawsuit claimed the bank steered home buyers to a particular neighborhood based on their race or ethnicity, and the suit also accused the bank of violating the landmark Fair Housing Act of 1968, which sought to put an end to housing segregation.
The U.S. government filed a lawsuit Wednesday, Jan. 18 that claimed JPMorgan Chase discriminated against “thousands” of Black and Hispanic mortgage borrowers from 2006 to 2009.
According to the lawsuit, the average Black and Hispanic home buyer paid an estimated $1,000 more than their similarly situated white peers. In total, the discrimination cost nearly 53, 000 borrowers “tens of millions of dollars in damages,” the government said.
Countrywide Financial paid out a $335 million settlement in 2011 after the U.S. Department of Justice conducted an investigation that revealed that loan officers took advantage of nonwhite borrowers.
The high-profile investigation concluded that more than 200,000 nonwhite borrowers across the country were victims of discriminatory mortgage lending practices from 2004 to 2008. Countrywide also steered nearly 10,000 nonwhite borrowers into expensive subprime mortgages, while white borrowers with similar credentials received regular loans.
A U.S. Department of Justice and the Consumer Financial Protection investigation uncovered that Ohio-based Fifth Third Bank has been charging Black and Latino borrowers more interest on auto loans.
Fifth Third Bank paid out $18 million to customers in 2015. Many of the complaints stemmed from the bank allowing car dealers to raise interest rates as they saw fit. Dealerships charged Black and Latino customers $200 more compared to white customers over the course of their auto loans.

So my facebook friend just posted this pic with this text….
Well, I just witnessed blatant racial injustice with my own eyes. I was getting in my car after exiting a store when a young black man stumbled past me and collapsed against the store wall. When I got out to see if he was okay, a group of white people came rushing over, one of whom was a 20-something white woman who declared in distress, “I ran a red light and hit him with my car!” People immediately assured her that SHE would be okay, meanwhile the young man is writhing in pain on the ground, pants leg torn, tears running down his face. When the police arrived and the young woman explained what happened, it was suggested to her that maybe the light had been yellow and that the young man had “darted out into the street into her path.” I was floored. I said, “But she just SAID she ran the red light and hit him in the intersection!”
The police officers then led the young woman away and began talking with her privately in low tones. When the paramedics FINALLY got there I was surprised at the hostility they showed towards the young man. One blonde female EMT (shown in the photo) suggested that he couldn’t be THAT hurt if he was able to walk from the place where he was struck to the sidewalk where he finally collapsed. White bystanders commented several times about “What that poor girl must be going through.” I was the only one who commented on what the young man must be going through, what, with his mangled leg and all. I am absolutely positive that in the end “that poor girl” will be absolved of all wrongdoing and be able to go on her merry way. After all, she just ran a red light and slammed her car into the body of some black kid on a bike, right? And people wonder why black people are so angry and want to break shit.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: This week, NYPD cop Pedro Serrano has been testifying about the unfair targeting of Blacks and Hispanics for New York’s Stop and Frisk. To support his case, Serrano unveiled a video recording of superior ordering him to stop and frisk Black and Latino males between the ages of 14 and 21. This cop is very, very brave.
Good cops don’t turn a blind eye to the corruption and racism being practiced by their fellow officers.
