I agree with your second paragraph but I don't think I'd take mental damage from the academics at all!
From prior experience hanging out with those types of people, they'd keep each other entertained debating politics and I'd hang out on the couch and occasionally chime in, and they are far less likely to start toxic drama with me or each other (pure academic drama has a different flavor and is usually based in a mutual respect)
