as a result of that trans flag edit a handful of trans folks have started following me and although hello hi! you are very welcome here! I hope you're doing well! I do feel it only fair I should point out that I am myself not trans. I am just some bitch with access to an 11 year old edition of photoshop

when the Belgian was here I handed him coffee in my mug that says 'Grumpy Fuckers Club', right.

"you get one guess whose mug that is", I say "yours? but you're not grumpy", he says, uncertainly

and my mother started laughing at an indecent volume

What’s your advice for someone who wants to learn how to play the banjo?

Yayyyyyy!

Imma post this publicly just in case anyone else vibes too.

Get yourself a banjo and just sit with it all the time. When I was a kid learning how to play string instruments I would always have the instrument in my lap while I watched TV. During commercials or moments where I felt I could multitask I would strum and get comfy. Find some chord positions online and just sit with your fingers in those spots while you watch your show (or read your book, whatever you like to do in your leisure time). Shake your hand out and reposition that same chord. Get the muscles used to being there and become familiar with the feeling!

This is always my first advice when teaching someone to play because with familiarity comes comfort. Feeling comfortable with your instrument invites you to keep going :-)

Also please always be kind with it sounding bad at first! It's ok! Figure out what makes your notes sound the best that you can and then practice that way. You got this!

Also check out my homies' crew "the black banjo reclamation project"! It's a bunch of black artists reclaiming our instrument! Nothing more inspiring in my opinion :'-) the history of the banjo being a black slave instrument is what inspired me to learn. There's a lot of soul, I'm really happy you are interested too!
