I’ve always had a sinking feeling in my stomach when I thought of my first time trying to learn a power..
Though, it’s harder to call it sinking when you’re literally falling.
Now, that was me as I was dropped from the edge of space. They told us we were 62 miles up, at some kind of line or another. I think it started with a K or C? But getting back to the point, my stomach felt like it had a black hole in it, trying to suck up everything in me. Admittedly, I threw up less than a minute after I was dropped. After that, I did my hardest to fly. I spread my body, did a pose, flapped my arms, anything that could indicate flying. But nothing worked, and I just fell faster and faster. I’d gone skydiving before, but with the knowledge I couldn’t pull a chute to bring me down safely, I started praying.
There has to be some god out there that wouldn’t let someone die in a powers test, right? Somebody up there wouldn’t let someone go out in an embarrassing way such as this? “Kid trying to learn to fly just splats on the ground instead.” is what the headline would read. The praying lasted a good while, I’d like to say 10-15 miles of the 62. I said my goodbyes, I cried, I was angry. I must have gone through every emotion there is to feel. I felt my regrets and my sins battling against my good deeds and righteous moments, one side trying to conquer the other so my fate in the afterlife could be decided.
But soon enough, sooner than expected, things on the ground got bigger. A blur of cities turned into individual buildings, houses were no longer too close to be counted as one big row, and cars no longer looked like ants. I looked straight down at the stadium that was meant to act as the landing pad once we actually flew. I could barely make out the face of instructor, nor the students that went before me, but I’m sure the look on their faces were ones of horror, watching a student plummet to the ground, to their demise. But hey, I might as well go out like a hero, right? At the very end of my fall, I accepted my end, and I tried to stick a superhero landing as I hit the ground, and everything went black.
I woke up in the hospital, my eyes opening to the sight of my family all standing over me. It was very confusing for the next couple minutes, as there was a lot of hugging and crying and apologizing from everyone, but soon enough the doctor came in and explained everything.
Apparently, my power isn’t flight! My body has the ability to absorb hard blows. So anything like getting hit by a car, or falling off a building can’t hurt me! Though, I did hear they’d be needing to repair the groundwork of the stadium now..
