Note to self

@youllneedthis

One of my favorite scenes from Letterkenny

This show hurts my brain

Can’t blame you, it’s like a shakespearian comedy about nothing, sped up, with the Middle English replaced by equally obfuscatory Albertan slang.

Excuse you that ain’t Albertan that’s the wrong coast. It’s Ontario slang.

29 tricks to Profile People Around You

For the behavioral “deductionist” in all of us:

What pocket is the wallet carried in? (handedness)

What direction to the soles of the shoes tend to wear?

Overall condition of clothing vs. posture and personal carriage

Thumbs hanging out of pockets indicates confidence

Thumbs only in pockets indicates confidence and sometimes physical attraction

When was the last haircut (estimate)

Condition of fingernails, decor, cleanliness, length since trim

Willingness to make non-confrontational eye contact with strangers (Rate 1-8 from Ellipsis chart)

Which direction do the feet point in standing conversation?

Willingness to move out of the way of others (speed at which this takes place) (Using Ellipsis Social Weakness Chart)

Natural blink rate in conversation (increase or decrease when speaking)

Condition of shoe laces (have they been walked on)

Back of leg wrinkles (Length of seated time)

Are fidgeting gestures increased in public spaces or limited? (From Social Weakness Chart)

Legs crossed away from open part of room or toward nearest wall

Purse or shopping bags placed in contact with feet while seated or otherwise touching the body at all times

Notice permanence of facial wrinkles that have developed over their lifetime

Is the cell phone placed face down when seated in public?

If a watch is worn, is it set exactly to time, behind or deliberately set ahead?

Eyesight: Does the person adjust the distance of cell phone from face when using it?

Does the person break eye contact in order to swallow during conversation (Social Weakness Chart)

Care and handling of objects: How does the person treat their own things? Things of others?

If a tie is worn, how tight has it been made and is it adjusted to the right or left of center?

Are fingernails bitten, trimmed or left alone?

Does the person appear to regularly pick their cuticles? Is there evidence that they have JUST begun to do so?

Are notches on the belt indicative of weight loss or gain?

Are both shoes laced right/left, left/right (Do they match)?

What kind of wear/dirt appears on the rear cuffs of the pants?

Are scars or calluses more prevalent on one hand than the other?

“Which condition are their organs in?”

Ways to un-stick a stuck story

  • Do an outline, whatever way works best. Get yourself out of the word soup and know where the story is headed.
  • Conflicts and obstacles. Hurt the protagonist, put things in their way, this keeps the story interesting. An easy journey makes the story boring and boring is hard to write.
  • Change the POV. Sometimes all it takes to untangle a knotted story is to look at it through different eyes, be it through the sidekick, the antagonist, a minor character, whatever.
  • Know the characters. You can’t write a story if the characters are strangers to you. Know their likes, dislikes, fears, and most importantly, their motivation. This makes the path clearer.
  • Fill in holes. Writing doesn’t have to be linear; you can always go back and fill in plotholes, and add content and context.
  • Have flashbacks, hallucinations, dream sequences or foreshadowing events. These stir the story up, deviations from the expected course add a feeling of urgency and uncertainty to the narrative.
  • Introduce a new mystery. If there’s something that just doesn’t add up, a big question mark, the story becomes more compelling. Beware: this can also cause you to sink further into the mire.
  • Take something from your protagonist. A weapon, asset, ally or loved one. Force him to operate without it, it can reinvigorate a stale story.
  • Twists and betrayal. Maybe someone isn’t who they say they are or the protagonist is betrayed by someone he thought he could trust. This can shake the story up and get it rolling again.
  • Secrets. If someone has a deep, dark secret that they’re forced to lie about, it’s a good way to stir up some fresh conflict. New lies to cover up the old ones, the secret being revealed, and all the resulting chaos.
  • Kill someone. Make a character death that is productive to the plot, but not “just because”. If done well, it affects all the characters, stirs up the story and gets it moving.
  • Ill-advised character actions. Tension is created when a character we love does something we hate. Identify the thing the readers don’t want to happen, then engineer it so it happens worse than they imagined.
  • Create cliff-hangers. Keep the readers’ attention by putting the characters into new problems and make them wait for you to write your way out of it. This challenge can really bring out your creativity.
  • Raise the stakes. Make the consequences of failure worse, make the journey harder. Suddenly the protagonist’s goal is more than he expected, or he has to make an important choice.
  • Make the hero active. You can’t always wait for external influences on the characters, sometimes you have to make the hero take actions himself. Not necessarily to be successful, but active and complicit in the narrative.
  • Different threat levels. Make the conflicts on a physical level (“I’m about to be killed by a demon”), an emotional level (“But that demon was my true love”) and a philosophical level (“If I’m forced to kill my true love before they kill me, how can love ever succeed in the face of evil?”).
  • Figure out an ending. If you know where the story is going to end, it helps get the ball rolling towards that end, even if it’s not the same ending that you actually end up writing.
  • What if? What if the hero kills the antagonist now, gets captured, or goes insane? When you write down different questions like these, the answer to how to continue the story will present itself.
  • Start fresh or skip ahead. Delete the last five thousand words and try again. It’s terrifying at first, but frees you up for a fresh start to find a proper path. Or you can skip the part that’s putting you on edge – forget about that fidgety crap, you can do it later – and write the next scene. Whatever was in-between will come with time.

in case you didn’t realize how bad my procrastination has been getting, this is a web thing i made earlier this year to help me be less lazy and get more things done. basically you click anywhere and it creates a new Task, which you can edit and set a cycle for - the idea is that you keep the page open in a tab somewhere, and whenever one of your tasks times down to 0, the whole page goes red and starts making a faint but annoying noise until you click on the task to reset it and go actually Do The Thing

this took me a couple days to hack together; unfortunately, as with everything i ever attempt, i somehow never found the energy to add the finishing touches and i’ve basically never really used the thing and it’s been sitting uselessly in a folder ever since

my procrastination is getting so bad it’s become self-aware and is thwarting my attempts to control it

IMPORTANT NOTE: OBTAINING HRT THROUGH PLANNED PARENTHOOD DOES NOT REQUIRE ANY SORT OF PSYCH DIAGNOSIS OR SEEING A SEPERATE ENDOCRINOLOGIST. IF YOU LIVE IN THESE PLACES AND WANT HRT, PLEASE SAVE YOURSELF A FEW THOUSAND DOLLARS

Anonymous asked:

So this is probably going to be a weird ask, so let's go! I usually have pretty bad Dysphoria, it's not to bad right now (I actually feel pretty girly right now) and I'm trying to come up with some things to help my Dysphoria. And one of the thoughts I had was, hey, a lady had to pamper herself right! But now I'm struggling to find ways of doing that, that are girly and feminine, but also won't out me (I'm still super in the closet) {I'm mtf btw}

Ren says:

We’ve talked about this a little in the past, but I will try to think of some more!

  • clear nail polish - shiny and pretty but not obvious (also, just filing your nails can be great, as well as painting your toenails if you have closed-toed shoes in the winter)
  • lip gloss that’s close to your natural shade, or even chapstick
  • small makeup things like foundation or a tiiiiny bit of blush
  • things that smell nice - perfume, yummy-smelling hand soap…
  • wearing stuff under your clothes - if you can get your hands on lingerie it’s fantastic!
  • bubble baths
  • “punk” clothes - mod Max talks about that in this ask!
  • little pieces of jewelry, like anklets or necklaces that hang below the neckline of your shirt
  • draw flowers on your hands
  • put on a fun playlist and dance in your room
  • buy gossip or fashion magazines (or even browse their websites - I recommend Teen VogueInStyle, Lucky, SeventeenAllure, Marie ClaireElle, Nylon, Vogue, People, and Glamour!)
  • have some chocolate or tea
  • make a Pinterest of girly things you like - think of it like inspiration for your future wardrobe!
  • download Covet Fashion (shameless plug)
  • watch YouTube beauty vloggers
  • make some DIY beauty stuff - hey, if you’re home alone, what better to do than cover your face with oatmeal??
  • make avatars of yourself post-transition
  • watch episodes of Too Cute

Suggestions enthusiastically encouraged!!

Recommendation Sheet for Minorities in Webcomics

Spoilers abound– you have been warned. The comics themselves may also be triggering; I’m not going to go through and label them.

I’m making this because sometimes people ask me for webcomic recommendations based on a certain minority. Consider this an official recommendation sheet.

In order for a webcomic to be on the list, it has to have a relevant minority character, be of above average quality based on what I’ve seen, and have at least half of it read by me. If I’ve made any errors feel free to let me know, but I’m not interested in speculation (like Dina being asexual or Elliot being a transwomen) or criticisms about the comics in question.

LGB characters (And other sexual and romantic minorities):

- Missing Monday stars two lesbian/bi ladies. I admittedly haven’t read to the end, but it can be found at missingmondaycomic.com

- Rain contains many, including lesbian, gay, bi, pan, and asexual characters. Updates MWF and can be found at rainlgbt.smackjeeves.com

- El Goonish Shive starts out with questionable treatment of queer characters, but gets better with time. Has gay, bi, lesbian, and demisexual characters, updates MWF and can be read at egscomics.com

- Questionable Content has Dora and Tai, who are bisexual and gay respectively. It can be found at questionablecontent.net

- Dumbing of Age has Ethan (gay), Billie (Bi), Ruth (Bi), Becky (lesbian), Danny (Probably bi), Marcie (lesbian/bi), and Dina (Unknown). dumbingofage.com

- Gunnerkrigg Court has Paz and Kat (both are of unknown orientation) along with Shadow and Robot (who may or may not count as queer). Gunnerkrigg.com

- Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal should get an honorable mention for somehow having same-sex relationships without ever having real character development or stories. SMBC-comics.com

- Namesake has Alice (lesbian) and Vanessa (bi). Namesakecomic.com

- The Princess has too many to count. Theprincesscomic.com

- YU + ME DREAM, after the schoolgirl lesbian plot gets torn to shreds, is quite good and has plenty of queer characters. I haven’t read all of it, but it can be found at http://rosalarian.com/yume/

- Girls With Slingshots has too many to list, often with identities that I don’t have words for. Girlswithslingshots.com

- Sandra and Woo has a supporting character who is a lesbian, although the ads would have you believe that’s all of the comic. Sandraandwoo.com

Trans and Nonbinary characters:

- Claire in Questionable Content is a transgirl. Link is above.

- Transgirl Next Door can be found on Tumblr! transgirlnextdoor.tumblr.com

- El Goonish Shive’s Tedd is genderfluid and Sam is a transboy. There’s also speculation about other characters. Link can be found above.

- Carla and Jocelyn in Dumbing of Age. Link above.

- Rain has numerous, including transwomen, transmen, genderfluid people, and at least one intersex character. Link is above.

- Banshee in Namesake is trans by Word of God.

- The Princess is all about a young transgirl.

Characters that use ASL:

- That Deaf Guy is a hilarious comic about a deaf parent. Thatdeafguy.com

- Melody from Girls With Slingshots is deaf.

- Marcie from Dumbing of Age uses ASL, although she is not deaf. She may be mute.

Comics with interesting discussions on race relations:

- Dumbing of Age’s discussion of racism within a multiracial family.

- El Goonish Shive has, via the character Ashley, an interesting take on labels and stereotypes.

- The Princess talks about the relationship between heritage and modernism, and trying to strike a balance.

Other:

- Questionable Content uses AI rights to discuss many other, more complex issues of discrimination. It also discusses alcoholism in a compassionate way.

- Dumbing of Age’s Dina may or may not have Asperger Syndrome. I also really love Willis’s portrayal of Joyce (a Christian Fundamentalist) because it manages to embody the conflict between religious beliefs and liberalism exceptionally well.

- Depending on interpretation, Namesake discusses mental illness in a way that’s very relatable.

GUYS I bought this stuff the day after reading this and its so AWESOME! Normally my hair just sits there, just lays across my head. Dumb, dull, un-exciting with no life.

But a few spritzes of this stuff and you can make it awesome!

And it DOESN’T feel greasy or heavy! It doesn’t make your hair rock-hard and it smells AMAZING! I literally smells like a fun beach vacation: coconut oil and leather and its just awesome! And its adjustable ALL DAY LONG! Just rake your fingers through it and set it a new way. No greasy feel, no clumps of rock hard hair!

I bought this stuff at Walgreens for five/six bucks and I will ALWAYS keep it in my own personal stock. I’m tossing out my messy pastes and gels, I will ONLY use this stuff from now on and I’m going to recommend it to everyone with short hair that wants a lil’ oomf!

also worth noting: it’s also great for taming thick/puffy/curly hair!

Signal boost for all you short-haired cuties!
