A real thing that happened to me as a teenager.

I had what turned out to be a dangerous walking pneumonia, for a week, but the manager at Burger King wouldn’t let me off.  My breathing was very loud and ragged.  I was coughing on and breathing on the food.

I wasn’t allowed to leave.  I was told if i called out, I was fired.

So Im shuffling around wheezing loudly swaying with my high fever as I work drive thru by myself, and a paramedic walked in to order dinner.

He goes ballistic, My friends.  He demands to see the Manager.  he chews him out at the top of his lungs so the whole restaurant can here.  Guys working the back came up to watch.  Customers staring and thinking hard about the infectious food they were eating.  Dude losing his shit about how infectious I was and all the people management had been endangering for days judging from my breathing and I needed to be home on antibiotics RIGHT NOW and the health Department was going to hear about this.

I went home.  i got the week off.  Didn’t even need a doctor’s note.

Getting friends management doesn’t know to do this WOULD WORK.

Same manager not letting me take my influenza home a year later  despite repeated vomiting?  Threw up in front of customers.  Customers demanded money back and started threatening the manager with lawsuits.

I got to go home and got time off until I stopped vomitting.

GO AHEAD and THROW UP in front of Customers.  THEY will Complain.

Don’t be shy.

They are supposed to let you stay home when you are sick.  Stop protecting management. (Hiding how sick you are protects management).  They are abusing you.  Let them reap what they sow.

can’t say i am all that surprised at loreen winning but i am extremely disappointed. just wanna say, that i don’t wanna be angry or upset at loreen—no one denies that she is an amazing singer/artist and she achieved an great feat w winning twice, good for her honestly—but the whole affair leaves an incredibly bitter taste.

While I personally didn’t enjoy tattoo all that much even when it came out, now it’s downright tainted. I enjoyed Euphoria so much back in 2012 and since. It felt special and fresh and drew you right in, it left a lasting impression. Tattoo… doesn’t. It doesn’t feel special, it doesn’t grab me, it’s a decent song but that’s really it. Whatever. Saw someone say that if it wasn’t sung by Loreen but an unknown young swedish singer europe’s people wouldn’t care about or for the song here and i gotta say I agree. Nostalgia, and Loreen being an established household name, her ESC fame and legacy, those seem rather to be the major reasons fuelling her win—and it now taints that exact legacy.

And I hate it. Even Euphoria now leaves a bad taste and I hate it. I am upset. It shouldn’t be this way. The consistent and great dichotomy between jury and public is just… ugh.

Look, I have historically always widely disagreed with all the jury votes and even lots of the public votes. A lot of my favourites this year, Czechia, Moldova, Slovenia, Austria, etc. placed low. Sucks.

But nothing hurts so viscerally as seeing a widely beloved act that was the CLEAR chosen one by the people shown in loud support and millions of votes—the absolutely smashed public vote—a song that represents so well of what we love about ESC, a truly unique, extraordinary standout song, an unusual genre, sung in a native language and bridging those barriers, some funky lil dude no one really has heard of before, a colourful show, and some deeper meaning if you look closer at it and just such a catchy and fun song—get absolutely FUCKED OVER by an elite chosen few (supposedly representing their country but how could they, they certainly didn’t ask us) in a system with VERY questionable origins.

So much unity in music and the europeans choosing for their favourite. The people have spoken. And they said Cha Cha Cha. Loudly.

And now Loreen bears the brunt of the mess, the people’s anger and her legacy stained and it’s not fucking fair, not for her, because the system DOESN‘T FUCKING WORK.

I am upset.

the greatest logo redesign of all time is the mozilla logo

look at that. the old logo was meh they changed it instead you finally get a SERIF FONT. and it says moz://a. you can type that into ur address bar and it sends you to their website. thats cool as hell. a logo that doesnt look like a URL but it is. how the hell do you even do that

[ID: side-by-side comparison of Mozilla Firefox logos, which both consist of the word "mozilla" in all-lowercase. The old logo uses a sans serif font colored red. The current logo is white text in a serif font over a black rectangle. It uses a semi-colon in place of the letter 'i' and two forward-slashes in place of the L's. /end ID]

My main issue with Sweden winning honestly isn't even about the song, it's the fact that the professional jury consistently rewards non-offensive pop music and punishes entries that are even slightly out there. Sweden just happens to be very good at making non-offensive pop music, which is why they win the jury vote so often.

The problem with that is that it encourages countries to send in non-offensive pop music in order to appeal to the professional jury, most of which will be very mediocre and boring to watch. If the people didn't get a vote, we wouldn't see entries like Finland or Croatia, and that's bullshit! Those kinds of performances are what people watch eurovision for! Nobody wants to see a non-offensive pop music contest. We want originality! We want fun! We want the professional jury to go fuck themselves!

Anyway cha cha cha should have won and I will die on this hill

They should create a shonen with women

All women. I want all that bullshit about the power of friendship shouted by a overpowered girl main character. Homoerotic rivalry between women that aren’t about a guy they both like. Women who hit hard other women. Deadbeat mothers who abandon their family in search of something and stay at home dad that die tragically when their daughter is young and daughters who hate their deabeat mom for leaving them or look up to her and want to become like her. I think the deadbeat mom and the dead dad should be a staple of shonen with women.

I’ll allow three guys but they have to fulfill these roles

- Healer

- Guy whose power is being hot/bewitching people with his look

- Guy who’s like 67 but he’s really vain so he uses his power to look either 20ish or like a kid

the basic idea this post describes vs the shows that everyone recommends

honestly, i wish when i was a kid adults had said to me "lying is a thing most people do quite a bit of in social situations, its going to be useful to know how and when to do it, because if you dont you will often seem rude and offputting" instead of just "its bad to lie dont lie" because. guess who often seems rude and offputting.

This sounds like a shitpost but people should be allowed to be horny. As in, sexuality is just part of life for most people and there’s no reason for consensual sexual behavior to be punished. A celebrity getting “caught” at a sex club shouldn’t be a scandal. No one should be fired for having a fetlife profile outside of work. Nudes getting leaked shouldn’t be career-ending. Denying and hiding (consensual) sexual interests doesn’t make anyone more professional, it just makes everyone more repressed. And sterilizing ourselves to be better work drones isn’t productive, it’s just creepy. I’d rather my surgeon get absolutely railed on camera and come to work in a good mood, frankly.

I am dead

the “humans are inherently selfish” fanclub can genuinely and in all honesty go to hell. i once came back from a school yard where the kids had heaped piles of leaves and cut wildflowers on a narrow strip of grass bc a bee had died. i actually want to cry.

when i was a child, my parents told me our houseplant would die of lack of sunlight. i was so young i don’t even remember this, but apparently, my response to this was starting to carry the plant around like an emotional support stuffed animal. whenever my family went outside i would hold the pot on my head to make it reach the sun better. i wasn’t in school yet, didn’t have any exposure to the lessons on caring they give in elementary, i don’t remember my thought process - but i can guess. kids integrally care about things, even tiny bugs and inanimate plants. humans care.

don’t let them beat it out of you

as someone in my 40s, may i also add: if they beat it out of you? put in the work to relearn it until it’s a part of you again. a part you’re proud enough of that if someone tells you it’s dumb and you should stop, you can laugh and say “oh, no. no, i don’t believe i will.” and then keep on keepin’ on.

compassion can often be a skill that needs to be relearned. so relearn it and revel in it.

Not to sound like a fuckin hippie but please for the love of god start noticing and appreciating the natural world around you. You don’t have to go hike the entire Appalachian trail or anything and I get that not everyone has access to the outdoors for various reasons, but just fucking … look around you when you’re outside. Notice the sky and the sun and the birds and creatures. Start caring about them. I’m begging you.

hate how all these apocalyptic films show society breaking down the hot minute the grid goes down, with all the survivors banding off into tiny violent gangs that prey on each other.

bitch you are a member of one of the most social species in existence! it is actually insane the extent to which humans have evolved to use cooperation as our main survival tool. humans have been building and then rebuilding societies for as long as disasters have been bringing them down. an apocalypse would be fucking awful, but the survivors would end up building communities and networks and pooling resources and knowledge, because that’s what humans do. that’s what they DO!!!

This reminds me of a really great video by Sarah Zedig where the second half is her going off on apocalyptic, grimdark shows such as The Walking Dead as a ‘libertarian power fantasy where their dogshit ideology is never wrong’ and I’ve never forgotten it.

At its core, the edgelord trope that society would “break down” into violence the instant the cops stop answering the phones is a myth built on cynical belief that humans are - at their core - violent, selfish, cruel animals that are only kept in line with the violent enforcement of “law and order.”

Hell, it’s a myth built atop another myth that the police - the legitimate purveyors of state violence - are even competent at all!

Considering their abysmal track record for actually solving crimes and observed reluctance to put themselves in harm’s way, there’s hardly a case to be made that they are actively keeping society from descending into chaos. And if you think that’s woke anti-police nonsense, bear in mind that once, when the cops in New York did a work “slowdown”, crime went down.

Because see, there’s a second half to the apocalyptic “breakdown of society” myth, the one that appeals to a certain group of people. It’s the part where, now that society has become the State of Nature, the truly strong, independent, well-armed men of action have carte blanche to “restore order” with brutal, justified violence.

Apocalyptic movies are a popular genre because it takes the standard Hollywood power fantasy and gives it an adrenaline shot of compatible politics: libertarian, every man for himself, Übermensch crap. As it depicts the end of the world, with all the pornographic spectacle of chaos and human cruelty, it tells its audience that you won’t succumb when the rest those dumb, weak masses perish. Whether it’s zombies, plague, climate disaster, or solar flares making our cellphones stop working, you specifically (yes you, Kyle!) will rise above it.

And when it does, the strong and rugged will survive and start over. Make things how they “used to be.” Presumably a nice, pure, uncomplicated world suspiciously absent of all those “weak” folks that had been muddying the waters and getting in the way, before. The ones that had prevented the naturally strong men from reaching their true potential in the Old World.

To the people that truly buy into this garbage power fantasy, the inevitable apocalyptic collapse isn’t something to be feared, but prepared for.

They’re looking forward to it.

…that last line struck a nerve like an icepick to the skull
