$BILLIONAIRE could end world poverty is the leftist version of, like, global warming doesn’t real except it’s actually worse because really climate science relies on theory, modelling, and data collection and basically not even the best experts in the world are experts in more than a narrow subset of one of these so it is impossible even for a world-leading expert to fully evaluate the evidence by themself; but you only need, like, a second grade education in maths to understand that, disregarding all practical limitations like liquiduty, legality, logistics, international politics, second-order effects, if you didvide 150 billion USD by 3 billion poor people you get 50 USD per poor person which is enough to make you not-poor by the UN definition for less than a week.

i think the actual one people talk about is ending child hunger in the US or smthing

I’m sure people talk about that too, but there very much is talk about having $BILLIONAIRE fix world stuff. To take a concrete example, the HasBezosDecided gimmick account, which has 100K followers for tweeting every day “Jeff Bezos has decided he will not end world hunger today.” and similar crap.

Again, second-grade maths education. Divide eleven billion dollars per year by ca. 700M hungry folks: $16 per year. $1.33 per month. Disregarding all logistics and such, how much hunger are you remedying on $1.33 per month? One missed meal?

The linked reference from the IFPRI, of course, does not say $11bn.

Things i learned as a child that probably no one intended to teach me

  • To grown-ups, being bad at stuff is a sin. Forgetting stuff is the worst sin of all, and also doesn’t exist - it is widely believed (and your behaviour will be interpreted thusly) that in some Freudian sense, it is impossible to forget things if you care about them or their consequences or the people who care about those things.
  • Your being happy and enjoying what you do doesn’t matter. All that matters is whether you are Fulfilling Your Potential.
  • Human beings do not require rest outside of sleep. Thinking that you do is called ‘being lazy’.
  • Who you show physical affection to is a matter of politeness and social protocol, and has nothing to do with your own desires
  • It is rude to inform people of your preferences, even if they seem to care about catering to them and therefore might find this useful information.
  • Etiquette centres around doing things in especially awkward, skilful and time-consuming ways in order to demonstrate superiority over people who aren’t able to keep up.

"People with puritanical value systems are often very horny and depraved and that's funny" -- Yes. Good.

"If you're horny on the Internet & watch anime you must be a fascist" -- No. Bad.

“i’m totally only calling him gay because he’d be insulted by it, you guys, not because being gay is bad'

The two most common kinds of takes on here are "Capitalism is fundamentally *thing that is specific to post-WWII American capitalism*" and "Capitalism is fundamentally *thing that is true of at least 80% of all human societies*"

Don’t forget “capitalism is fundamentally *features of abusive interpersonal relationships that would happen under any economic system*”.

capitalism is when bad things happen and communism is when people are nice to each other

non-weebs be like, “i don’t like all the boobs and ass in anime,” but then weebs be like, “okay but like which anime did you watch?” and non-weebs be like, “i can’t believe Big Titty Cherry Blossom Swimsuit Club had so many titties!”

non-weebs be like “oh I enjoyed this Ghibli movie, maybe anime is okay”, but then weebs be like “hey you should watch Big Titty Cherry Blossom Swimsuit Club next, it’s great!” and non-weebs be like “anime is not okay”

weebs be like “stop recommending non-weebs titty shows, you filter out the boobs and ass more than you think,” then non-weebs be like “damn did you see the KonoSuba movie?”

There is a difference between “This is the moral thing to do” and “failure to do this is so reprehensible that it’s worth invoking state violence to rectify”

Just because something is correct and moral doesn’t mean I can’t agree-to-disagree, because sometimes cooperation / not-shooting-people is a higher value than the thing under discussion.

Civilization largely survives because of this tradeoff.
