I think it’s an important journey to see Heather’s actions toward Ray as the show progressed. At first she just saw him as the ‘lady’s man’ she went to school with, who was going to try and get into her pants because that’s what those boys do. Then in episode 4, he lived up to that reputation on PURPOSE because Ray wants people to think he’s a douche. He liked keeping people at arms length so he doesn’t have to get real with them. Then we see that he notices that he actually took it too far. Which is when the car scene happened. He felt bad for tossing her aside like she didn’t matter. And then he actually opened up just a little and showed her that he did notice her.

Heather has never seen that side to him before and of course being a little tipsy and caught up in the moment she kisses him.

And then the following episodes we see her intrigued in getting to know more of that side of him while at the same time she’s like “ok this isn’t who I’m meant to be attracted to. Bishop and I have had this will they won’t they thing going on and like that’s how this is supposed to go not me and ray” so she tries to get Ray out of her system, wanting him to fuck her like “all the other girls” before her.

Which isn’t how he sees her at all. That’s not what this is to him. And she doesn’t get that yet.

She let’s herself believe he’s an asshole playing the game because that’s what Natalie tells her, and that’s what is easiest to believe.

She tries to feel that passion and desire with Bishop because again that is what is ‘supposed’ to happen in her mind because that’s what Natalie has told her, and what her crush has been telling her for a while. But the spark just isn’t there.

But she won’t let her intrusive Ray thoughts in because he isn’t her summer love story. He isn’t who she is meant to end up with. And yet there he always is.

And by the time the Joust happens. She finds herself looking for Ray, wanting to see him. She could have been seriously hurt. And luckily she wasn’t. But all she cares about in that moment is finding Ray. And that moment is when I think she realises that there’s no point fighting what feelings she has because he is a good guy, and she can see that and doesn’t need to deny it to herself any longer. They might not fall in love, but if they did it wouldn’t be the end of the world after all.

John B: Yeah. And so we went back to her condo and it lasted a total of 25 seconds.

Sarah: Marathon. And then you and JJ high-fived.

John B: No. I felt like shit.

Sarah: Kind of thought all boys just wanted to hook up with anyone, anytime, anywhere.

John B: Yeah, I just ended up getting wasted. Then we’ll wait.

Sarah: Thank you.

like what the fuck was that?! luke tries to hold julie’s hand because he’s a soft ghost who is in love and his love language is touch and this beautiful girl just did something so big for him despite not knowing him for that long bc their connection is just that strong. and she reaches out. for him. 

she wants to hold his hand. 

can you imagine what would have happened if they actually managed to hold hands?? what would have even happened???? but they don’t. they fully make that effort and his hand passes through hers. they don’t even like, reach out and then go no, nevermind luke is ghost, they fully fucking make “contact.” 

and what luke does as a reaction isn’t blush and stutter and apologize – he gives her what i’m going to call a verbal hand-hold. he can’t communicate his feelings or affections through touch. so he does them in the second-best way he knows how, which is through words. 

“this is an interesting little relationship you and i have.”

it’s not much. it isn’t the depth of his feelings, he can’t find it in himself to initiate a deeper attachment when he thinks he’s going to be leaving her soon, but it’s something. it’s a reciprocation. it’s a confirmation. 

he wants julie to know that he feels it. he feels that their relationship is different than her relationships with alex or reggie. and he’s a ghost, of course it couldn’t happen, but… she isn’t alone. she’s not just the idiot that fell for a ghost – he is also the idiot that fell for a lifer.

and they can share that together. it’s an interesting relationship for sure, it’s a relationship that is emotionally dangerous, but he needs to make sure that before he goes, she knows that he feels the same way. and he, too, wishes things were different. 

and when she smiles back at him, he can feel peace with knowing that she got the message. 

I love the way Julie and Luke look at each other. Like, you can tell that they really care about each other, romantically or platonically. Either way, the love in their eyes is their way of making it clear to the other, “I’m here for you.” 

Luke looks at Julie full of wonder and curiosity, because this wrecking ball of a girl is constantly finding ways to blow him away. He looks at her like she hung the stars in the sky, like he’s never seen someone so beautiful. The way he looks at her is like he’s silently telling her that she’s incredible, a quiet reassurance when she feels insecure. 

And Julie, she looks at Luke like he brought her back to life because in a way, he did. He’s the one who brought music back to her. She looks at him like he’s her anchor, her tether back to the ground, no matter how high he flies, she knows they’ll always be there for each other and that she can count on him. She trusts him wholeheartedly, despite everything else.
