Oh, so twitter is DEAD dead
By intention, no less.
per the Emerald Boyking (whose picture I have thoughtfully cut in half, you are welcome)
I don’t LIKE this happening but it is amazing HOW it is
It's totally not "temporary". He has said that so he can backtrack when twitter blows up. Which it has. Or it was doing, before I dooms rolled through my 600 read tweets limit watching people call him names.
Now I just get the "rate limited" message. 🙄
These are the most plausible suggestions I’ve seen as to what’s actually going on
and
Apparently it was their google cloud contract ended at midnight. He’s such a fuckwit.
How is he doing an even worse job than we all thought he would? Our expectations were SO LOW.
While it is objectively hilarious that Musk is shooting down his own bird, I do feel for the small journalists who use Twitter to spread news and stories from places like the Middle East that are often ignored by the rest of the world, but are still important to share. They are losing their platform as well.
Twitter is, officially, unironically, dead.
Early today, almost everyone was having trouble viewing anything on Twitter. Eventually Elon tweeted this: viewing limits for all users.
Verified accounts - people who buy Twitter Blue - are limited to reading 6,000 posts per day. Unverified accounts can only read 600, and new unverified accounts only 300. He later updated the numbers to 8,000, 800, and 400 respectively, but the impact is the same. And if you're not logged in, you can't see any tweets at all.
This isn't even interacting with posts, such as liking, replying, retweeting, or quote-tweeting. This is viewing. The one basic interaction required to use any social media site.
Elon Musk is clawing back every basic feature and pushing a pay-to-win scheme onto everyone still on the site. And what do you get if you pay? You get to be in a club filled with the most vile, racist, queerphobic losers on the internet who invest their money into crypto, NFTs, and all sorts of lousy scams. No sensible person is going to pay for that.
Once upon a time, Twitter was a fabulous hub for at-the-moment developments. If there was breaking news somewhere in the world, you could know it within minutes. It gradually became a general hub for people of all walks of life, from artists, activists, politicians, everyday ordinary people.
Now it's just a place where you pay $8 to lick Elon Musk's shoe.
To quote a good friend of mine:
I cannot stress enough to Tumblr staff that they do not need to change the site. Do not try to be like Twitter. Do not try to be like Reddit. Do not alter how this site works.
Tumblr will be the most popular social media site if they continue letting all these other sites implode
I think in response to Twitter, Tumblr should make it so that you can't open any other apps on your phone until you've seen at least 600 posts for the day.
My favourite thing about the latest Twitter meltdown is all the artists reanimating their dead Tumblr accounts today and immediately being greeted with hundreds of notes because even a Tumblr account they literally have not posted to in 3–5 years has more active and engaged followers than the Twitter account that they've been updating daily.
now would be the absolute funniest time for tumblr to unban porn
today's completely random opinion that No One asked for: sex toys are morally neutral and important accessibility aids for a lot of disabilities, but in the age of articles about "something something Empowering Women's Sexuality" that have 29 affiliate links in them, we gotta take some steps to protect the sanctity of masturbation as one of the last remaining activities that you don't need to Buy Product to do. the clitoris is free and the most important body safe sex toy is the human hand
Wash your hands though. WASH THEM HANDS!!! DON’T JUST RINSE… WARSH!!!
I would really hope that this wouldn't need to be said, but yes.
*as listed by the UN. post in the tags if you're not from one of these cities!
I feel that this is an important case study in Tumblr demographics and what the polls are actually reflecting
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s credits have almost exclusively Japanese people in them; but one name sticks out:
By searching around, people have found this forum post from 2007:
Follow your dreams.

Blazing Saddles [1974]
Goddddddddddddd Cleavon Little was cute. Fuckin’ hell look at him.
i love watching wilder’s eyes in this scene - he’s watching every fucking muscle twitch, every micro-expression. he isn’t gonna drop that “morons” until he KNOWS he’s got him.
my god, they were both so good.
“you know… morons” was not in the script. All the points to Gene Wilder for getting Cleavon Little to corpse that hard on camera. Also props to Mel Brooks for leaving that take in the movie.
Blazing Saddles is what happened when Mel Brooks (Jewish WW2 vet) and Richard Pryor (Black man who grew up in shittiest conditions possible) got in a room, decided to throw their collective fucks out a window and see how many groups they could piss off in two hours.
This.
All true, but there’s something else worth talking about:
Brooks and Pryor knew EXACTLY how far to go, and where to stop. Brooks has talked about this–he would happily show a Black man escaping the noose, but not one being lynched.
There are important limits to this sort of comedy, a delicate balancing act of how to strike for maximum effect but not to punch down. And a lot of people who are saying “you couldn’t make Blazing Saddles today” don’t get that.
extremely good video on this exact subject
They are not as high-profile as the WGA, but I would like to bring everyone's attention to the imminent strike action by thousands of hotel workers in Los Angeles. They are set to go on strike tomorrow, July 1st, 2023.
More than 15,000 hotel workers are seeking higher pay, better benefits, and working conditions. This includes an across-the-board $5 an hour raise, as well as affordable healthcare and better pensions. They also are seeking a ban on the use of E-Verify, which is used to deny employment to undocumented workers and workers involved with the criminal justice system. You can follow what is happening at their Twitter.
I feel bad for people who’ve never experienced a corn maze bc it’s not even fun but you just have to do it
I'd like to reblog this with some tags and comments bc I've really appreciated reading them
people who get what I mean:
people who have found a way to have fun in the corn maze but who I'm a little worried about:
person who we are going to put in the corn:
Have you ever heard Largo al factotum played on a mechanical clock? Here is something amazing.
Me as a professor in the Jagiellonian university: annoying other professors by listening to Mozart and Rossini arias on my clock all day.
[This clock has at least one other track, I know it is a Mozart aria but do not know which one.]
Usually I’m such a positive blogger! However, this video was a bit of a letdown for me. So much of what makes Rossini feel like Rossini is in the articulation, in the crispness. Yes, I’ll admit it’s impressive that the clock replicated the pitches and rhythms in time. However, it felt too heavy to feel like Rossini to me. As cool a feat as this is, I’d maybe want to hear the clock play something heavier. Puccini might actually be a good fit for this because of the almost pedal-like sound effect created by the clock.
