love when you stop a cat from doing something and instead of understanding that they shouldnt be doing that theyre just like. ah sorry my good sir you seem to have interrupted me. no worries let me just shimmy past you and get a taste of that pan of hot oil. please.
As someone who owns cats that will run away if you get up while they are eating from another cat's bowl, but not while they are eating from their own bowl: I am more inclined to agree with the posts that say "cats understand the concept of sin".
sometimes when they see you coming they do the naughty thing faster (eg: when trying to steal an object they cant quite reach, or trying to eat all of something). they realize you're going to stop them, but their thought process doesn't reach the conclusion of "I shouldn't be doing this".
instead they're like "I guess there's a time limit to my task now. but god as my witness I'm gonna complete it."
twitter is broken today 😭 are there any other ways that people search for anthologies to apply to?
might not be broken actually! Might be working as intended!
OH FUCK! okay twitter is dead, that’s amazing. this is a death blow. does he not understand that the platform relies on addictive doom scrolling, and that people actively want to quit but can’t because it activates all the right brain chemicals? this is wonderful for me at least, with Elon’s help I can finally kick this particular addiction.
What’s your LEAST favorite fictional magic system. Anything you’ve seen and immediately went Damn this is dog-piss
I know it's a meme answer but even when Harry Potter was popular I thought it's magic system was stupid. It basically doesn't have one. For a series about a magic school, they basically don't teach you anything about magic.
The most explanation of the magic system is the whole wand ownership thing. Which implies that magic gives wands a degree of sentience but only to enforce property law.
Some of y'all are missing the point. It's fine to write a story where magic is like Harry Potter magic. Sometimes there's just wizards and you don't really need to explain how they do their magic. Arthurian myth is a great example. They never really explain how magic works, but it functions for the narrative. Arthurian wizards are mysterious! It makes sense that the audience wouldn't know how they functioned.
Harry Potter is a series that takes place entirely inside a school for wizards, and is supposedly about the characters learning how to perform and improve magic. Damn near every single plot revolves around the functioning and production of a particular form of magic.
The fact that miss Rowling never feels the need to actually explain how magic works is, charitably speaking, one hell of a missed opportunity. Magic for this narrative is a load baring element. It's a boulder the narrative has to push uphill.
Imo it's part of why the new media she's making sucks so much. The original stories were carried by strong, well-developed characters. it was an enjoyable high school story even without the magical elements. So the moment she tries to explore the world outside of these characters, the world buckles under its own weight.
one of my favorite bits in doctor who is when someone is like your time machine doesn’t work very well does it and the doctor is like Excuse You, This Is A Type 40 TARDIS That Can Go Anywhere In Time And Space. that’s like if i drove to a place where they don’t have cars but know about them and took someone for a drive and they saw cooling that only works on one setting and heat that barely works and a broken cd player despite the functioning tape deck and shaky brakes and they went mate your cars a bit shit isn’t it and you were like fuck you, this is a 2002 toyota camry, it can drive on roads
doctor who heritage post
there is a limit to how many tweets you can see in a day now? 😀 tf is this??? who thought it was a smart idea?

the difference between the way jing yuan talks to jingliu and yanqing talking to jing yuan in the jp dub is very cute
oh goodie i was writing this but i forgot agahdkfj but anyway…
the way jing yuan talks to jingliu is pretty polite, using the 丁寧形 and all
meanwhile yanqing is there using 普通形 with jing yuan like agshdjlfl
also the way yanqing use 将軍 for jing yuan when they’re alone but in front of others he put in an extra 様 like agshfjfkf
丁寧形 is what you’d use when talking Tom your teacher but 普通形 is used between people who are close, or you’d risk being rude or offending the partner in your conversation
like i cringe every time my brain trips and i accidentally use 普通形 when talking to teachers agshdjfgl and then i correct it into 丁寧形 and pretending like i just forgot how to use words…
but it is quite surprising because i thought yanqing would use 丁寧形 with jing yuan because a) his teacher, b) the one who raised him, and c) literally his boss. but then he just 普通形 his way through
Today's hot take:
Men... Can be oppressed.
They can be men of color, or disabled, or queer, or Jewish, or poor, etc.
"Men aren't oppressed" is a nonsense statement. Being a man does not exempt men from being marginalized in other ways.
Men as a class are not oppressed. Thats what feminists mean when they say men are not oppressed. Being marginalized in other ways does not negate their male privilege or the truth of that statement.
I'm a feminist. I don't say "men are oppressed" because I don't think there's any way you can phrase it or modify it to make it actually true for all men. I also don't even believe "men as a class" is a useful descriptor, because... well, I'll get into it.
So the thing is that dropping the "as a class" part off the phrase "men are not oppressed" means people think you're saying "men (as individuals) are not oppressed", and that's how you get people who say "men (as individuals) can never be oppressed".
So one of my protests here is against the generalized language where people aren't making it clear if they're talking about "men (as a class)" or "men (as individuals)".
And no, I do not think we should "just assume" what someone means specifically because that muddies the waters, and folks take advantage of that.
If you just assume and never clarify, then people can either trick you into saying you agree with something you're actually against, or they can intentional misrepresent what you're saying to others.
For example, if a radfem says "Men can't be oppressed", she means that both on a class basis and on an individual basis. Many radfems literally do not think it is possible for men to be oppressed, period.
But!
Even saying "men as a class aren't oppressed" isn't quite right.
I'd say the closest-to-correct way to phrase it would be:
"Men, as a class, are often privileged for being men, but can also be oppressed for being men when their manhood intersects with other marginalized identities."
Like. It's just quite literally impossible in any way to say "Men as a class are not oppressed for being men". Because there are men who are oppressed for being men. So either those men don't belong to "men as a class", which is a whole barrel of worms,
OR
we should just stop saying "men can't be oppressed".
Try out "Men as a class are privileged".
I think that gets across what you're trying to say much more clearly with implying that like, marginalized men aren't oppressed. Because someone can be privileged and marginalized at the same time, even for the same identity (manhood, in this case).
Thats a a lot of word salad to say you dont understand basic feminist principles despite calling yourself one. If you dont agree with the statement that men are not oppressed for being men, that men and women are distinct classes, and that men oppress women on the basis of our sex then you are not a feminist (which is fine). But one of absolute basics of feminist analysis is talking about men as a oppressor class.
Trans men are oppressed for being trans men, not just for being trans. Black men are oppressed for being black men, not just for being black. Gay men are oppressed for being gay men, not just for being gay. And that's just three examples.
In all of these cases, if the person ceased being a man, the oppression would change and in some cases completely go away.
We can talk about "men as an oppressor class" but saying "men aren't oppressed" with no clarification as to whether or not you are speaking about "men as a class" or "men as individuals" is inherently unclear and only contributes harm to these discussions.
And to be quite frank, I don't think there is a monolith "men as an oppressor class". I don't think there's a monolithic "women as an oppressed class" either for that matter.
Your gender or sex does not, in fact, determine if you're the most oppressed person in the room.
Gay men are oppressed for being GAY. If they were straight men the oppression goes away.
If a black man was a black woman shed still be oppressed for being black.
Ffs
Yeah and if he were a cis woman the oppression would go away, too, because now he'd be a straight cis woman.
Gay men are oppressed for being men attracted to other men.
Their manhood is an integral part of why they are oppressed. If they were not men, they would not be gay in the first place.
You can't be a gay man without being a man.

the funniest thing ever just happened to me
im changing my name purely bc i don’t like it and we just told my family like a month ago. i haven’t been home since then but today i got back and my (extremely country) uncle gives me a pat on the back and goes “so i hear you’re my nephew now. proud of you, son” and i have to very gently say i am so so happy to hear that but i am still his niece just with a cooler name. and he throws his hat down on the table and goes “no! but ive been practicing!” so now he is calling me his nephew for fun
Every few months twitterinas bring back the “carnivores are a problematic element of nature and we should feed them synthetic meat and make it so they don’t eat herbivores. this is completely normal, feasible and won’t have any kind of repercussion on the ecosystem” discourse
First time I saw that was a guy who had as proposition to create fake prey animals with a robotic exoskeleton and covered in synthetic meat that predators would hunt, eat and then the exoskeleton would get up and go to the lab to get re meated. That was funny as hell
Quick reminder since apparently it bears reminding in both directions: if bigoted people, closed-minded people overall, or your own internalized insecurities misinterpret a queer person’s message in a way that hurts/endangers you, yeah, it sucks, but it’s not the fault of the queer person in question, nor should it be a reason for them to silence themselves. They’re probably as hurt/pissed as you are that someone misinterpreted and misused their message to do harm.
Of course sadly there’ll still be queer people that actually DO mean harm and dismissal to other queer people – I ain’t speaking for those and it’s not the best way to ensure their and others’ wellbeing imo. I’m just saying – not all people will be like that. That’s what I want to believe. So hopefully let’s not put everyone in the same bag, keep supporting each other, WHILE allowing each other to advocate for our own visibility, without having to self-erase or self-censor to accomodate to what haters might say.
It’ll be tougher this way, maybe, because humans seem to like to draw extreme conclusions very quick, but I don’t believe there’s any better way for us all to be alright and stay alright on the long run.
