Είχε καπνό πολύ και δε μπορούσες να καταλάβεις πως η φωτιά ήταν τόσο κοντά, ο καπνός έμπαινε στο σπίτι και φύγαμε όχι γιατί πιστεύαμε θα μας φτάσει η φωτιά, αλλά γιατί έβηχε το μωρό. Είπαμε θα πάμε προς την παραλία . Μεσα σε δεκα λεπτά, ώσπου να τη ντύσω και να βάλω δυο φρούτα στην τσάντα της , κόπηκε το ρεύμα. Βγήκαμε στο δρόμο , στα σπίτια οι γείτονες έριχναν νερά με τα λαστιχα, άλλοι ετρεχαν , η Ντίνα απο απέναντι έψαχνε το γιο της. Έμπαιναν στα αυτοκινητα και έβγαιναν πάλι γιατί οι δρόμοι ηταν κλειστοί και κατεβαίναμε ολοι προς την παραλία. Πενηντα μέτρα παρακάτω μας έφτασε η φωτιά. Ουρλιαχτά , κουκουνάρια με φλόγες, να φωνάζει κόσμος το όνομα του παιδιού της Ντίνας, πηγαίναμε οπου πήγαιναν οι άλλοι, η μικρή εκλαιγε την κρατούσα αγκαλιά και της έλεγα θα σωθούμε , θα σωθουμε. Μπροστά μας καμμένα, δίπλα φλόγες, η μάνα μου προχωρούσε μπροστά μου, σαν να θελε να μου ανοίξει το δρόμο. Ειδε κατι σαν κορμό, ήταν ανθρωπος. Καμμενος άνθρωπος. Ενα καρβουνο σε ανθρωπινο σχημα, τον κάναμε στο πλάι για να μη περάσουμε από πάνω του. Φτάσαμε στην παραλία, νομίζαμε θα μείνουμε εκεί, καιγοταν η άμμος, χωρις υπερβολή. Απο μια ταβέρνα που δεν είχε ακομη καει μπήκαμε στη θαλασσα. Περπατώντας στα νερά περασαμε μέχρι το ξενοδοχείο που ηρθαν και μας πηραν οι βάρκες, δεν ξέρω ποσοι… Πεντακόσσιοι; Μπορεί παραπάνω . Δεν άκουγα άλλο τις φωνές. Ελεγα μονο στη μικρή, θα σωθουμε, θα σωθούμε. Μας συνέλλεξαν οι βάρκες. Πρωτα τραυματίες και παιδιά ειπαν. Φτασαμε βουβοί στη Ραφήνα, δεν άλλαξα κουβέντα με άνθρωπο, δε μιλούσαν οι άνθρωποι.

Μολις βγήκαμε μου πήραν το παιδί το τύλιξαν με κουβερτα και μας είπαν θα πάμε στο νοσοκομείο, προληπτικά. Άγνωστοι μου έδειχναν φωτογραφίες στα κινητά, αν είχα δει καποιον. Νόμιζα τους εχω δει όλους η κανεναν, δεν απαντούσα, τι να έλεγα.

Δεν έχω πια σπίτι, δεν εχω αυτοκίνητο, έχω μόνο τα ρούχα μου και το κινητό που κρατούσα με το στόμα στο νερό για να επικοινωνήσω . Αλλα δε με νοιάζει.

Εχω την κόρη μου και τη μάνα μου. Ζω.

Seriously. I saw it with my own eyes. I looked out of the window of my relative’s apartment and there it was, the mountain out of Xalandri wreathed in smoke. The other one was GLOWING ORANGE AND SHIMMERING FROM THE HEAT. AND THE WIND? I THOUGHT IT WOULD HIT US. My relatives hit the road closures because of it.

And you know what’s more? Everyone who watches the news in the morning woke up to a breaking story on how about twenty-three people got stuck in a building and were found hugging their children and holding the hands of strangers because they knew it was the end and they could do nothing. Imagine  that.

I hate having to say this but please please please reblog or whatever is done here to spread this around, it’s terrible and a country so far in debt will really struggle.

Several great fires started yesterday in Athens, and they still aren’t under control today. The sky is dark even though it’s noon, and a fool burned smell is in the air. Since this morning, over a hundred people have lost their lives, including small children. 27 of them were found burned to death inside a tavern, where they had been trapped by the flames. Their bodies were found hugging. A 13 year old girl jumped off a cliff because the flames were drawing close and died. 1500 children are trapped in summer camps near the area to this hour. 300 other citizens are seriously injured, while the number of missing people isn’t yet announced. I saw a young man on the news with a newborn in his arms, crying in panic as he couldn’t find his wife. I can hear my neighbor crying as I am typing this, like she has done for hours after she learned about the loss of a loved one. All my friends are out to medical centers to donate blood for the victims. The power is out in almost half of the city. All social events were cancelled. Today was declared as a day of national mourning.

I’m not quite near the fire myself, so I am probably safe. But I cannot tell you how affected I am by these events.

Listen guys, yesterday a huge fire began in Greece near Athens 74 people have been killed so far and almost 200 are injured, 50 of them are in critical condition.

The victims were greeks and tourists of every age. 26 were found hugging together in a circle because they couldn’t escape and some others tried to escape by diving to the sea but not all of them survived, some were swimming for four hours.

Every single year the same things happens in Greece, every damn summer our country is burned, people lose their houses and families, then no one cares and the cycle repeats.

Its not just a weather issue, there is always a greater evil hidden behind all of this and nothing changes.

Last year my house almost burned, we were lucky on the last minute but I can still remember the fear of the people around me, running around and trying to help, the panicked animals and the sickening anxiety that I might lose my house and my cat.

Funny how when people think about Greece all they talk about is our economic crisis and shitty politicians (and even dare to act like they know everything about those matters), yet for some strange reason, when it comes to the refugee crisis, the tensions with Turkey or the fire catastrophes, silence ensues.

I’m positive that if it were a stronger country or a “popular” one getting burned, everyone would magically transform into Mother Teresa and pray, cry and reblog everything they can.

But no, this is Greece, the “joke of Europe”, or, as all fandoms here know it, “that one ancient country with the really cool mythology and gods”. No future or innocent people to worry about, right?

Εσύ που διαβάζεις αυτό το κείμενο, που βλέπεις αυτές τις εικόνες, που αισθάνεσαι τύψεις που πέταξες ένα αναμμένο τσιγάρο μέσα στος δάσος, που έβαλες την φωτιά για να χτίσεις σπίτια, που στοίχισες την ζωή σε 10.000 κατοίκους και σε ακόμα περισσότερους.. Σε παιδιά, οικογένειες, ηλικιωμένους, ζώα.. Χιλιάδες και χιλιάδες ψυχές.. Πώς αισθάνεσαι;

Πώς νιώθεις ρε ξεφτίλα που σκότωσες τόσο κόσμο;

Πού πέθαναν τόσα παιδιά, οικογένειες;

Πού άνθρωποι ακόμα ψάχνουν στα καμμένα τους δικούς τους;

Πώς αισθάνεσαι ρε;

Βεβαίως.. δεν νιώθεις. Δεν νιώθεις τίποτα. ΤΊ-ΠΟ-ΤΑ. Είσαι απλά άλλος ένας σαν όλους τους άλλους, που νοιάζεται για τον εαυτούλη του. Που θέλει να χτίσει, να πουλήσει για να βγάλει κέρδη.

Την χώρα σου δεν την λυπάσαι;

Και αν είσαι ξένος, δεν λυπάσαι αυτή την γαμημένη χώρα που έχει περάσει τόσα;

Φυσικά και όχι.. Αφού δεν νιώθεις. Δεν πονάς, δεν ήσουν εκεί να κινδυνεύεις, να τρέξεις να σωθείς.

Άμα όμως γίνεις ένας από αυτούς, πώς θα νιώθεις ρε παπάρα;

Δεν ξέρω βασικά αν πρέπει να στα γράφω αυτά. Όποιος νιώθει δεν ξερει να διαβάζει.

Η Ελλάδα πέρασε πολλά και περνάει πολλά.

Κάθε χρόνο φωτιές, πλημμύρες και καταστροφές. Και ας μην ξεχνάμε την οικονομική κρίση έτσι..

Και όμως, αντί να πέσουμε, είμαστε ψηλά.

Οι ήρωες μας, οι πυροσβέστες και άνθρωποι που προσφέρθηκαν να βοηθήσουν, είναι εδώ. Μας βοηθάνε, μας δίνουν κουράγιο. Δεν έφυγαν. Δεν κάθονται σε μια πολυθρόνα να τα ξύνουν σαν τους πολιτικούς μας. Όχι. Είναι δίπλα μας.

Δεν μπορούμε να τους προσφέρουμε λεφτά, μα τον σεβασμό και την ευγνωμοσύνη μας.

Για όλες τις φορές που ήταν δίπλα μας.
