Captain Marvel is like the opposite of military propaganda. Carol went into the Air Force BECAUSE SHE WANTED TO FLY, not because she wanted to fight, and she also did it as a means of getting an education/degree because her sexist father would only pay for her brother to go to school even though Carol was a hell of a student. (This speaks so much to the truth of the US military… how many people have risked their lives just because they couldn’t afford another way to get a college degree?) The movie emphasizes how unfairly the Air Force treated Carol and Maria over and over again, and all they ever wanted to do was make a difference and help people. The scientist that they most respected was working to end wars and save people, not kill. Carol gave her life to do the right thing when she blew that engine up. The “bad guys” in the movie turn out to just be refugees and Carol was brainwashed to believe in the superiority of the Kree and that they were just doing what was right for the people of the galaxy when in reality they were subjugating everyone and trying to stomp out the Skrulls because they dared to resist. The Kree government/military was lying to its OWN PEOPLE about this. And by the end, Carol’s mission is not only to help the Skrulls find a home, but to make sure everyone knows the truth and to stop the Kree from their imperialism.
Like… I don’t know how else to frame it except to say this movie is meant to put a mirror up to us as a society and be like OPEN YOUR EYES AND TAKE A STAND LIKE CAROL DID! LOOK AT WHAT YOU BELIEVE AND WHAT YOU ARE TOLD AND QUESTION IT BECAUSE PEOPLE WILL ALWAYS BE MORE IMPORTANT THAN ANY MILITARY OR GOVERNMENT AGENDA.
(Not to mention there’s been plenty of “military propaganda” in several other superhero movies but OF COURSE people want to bring it up as some sort of valid criticism now that the lead is a woman who won’t shut up about her beliefs just because she’s in a big blockbuster movie.)
