Captain Marvel is like the opposite of military propaganda. Carol went into the Air Force BECAUSE SHE WANTED TO FLY, not because she wanted to fight, and she also did it as a means of getting an education/degree because her sexist father would only pay for her brother to go to school even though Carol was a hell of a student. (This speaks so much to the truth of the US military… how many people have risked their lives just because they couldn’t afford another way to get a college degree?) The movie emphasizes how unfairly the Air Force treated Carol and Maria over and over again, and all they ever wanted to do was make a difference and help people. The scientist that they most respected was working to end wars and save people, not kill. Carol gave her life to do the right thing when she blew that engine up. The “bad guys” in the movie turn out to just be refugees and Carol was brainwashed to believe in the superiority of the Kree and that they were just doing what was right for the people of the galaxy when in reality they were subjugating everyone and trying to stomp out the Skrulls because they dared to resist. The Kree government/military was lying to its OWN PEOPLE about this. And by the end, Carol’s mission is not only to help the Skrulls find a home, but to make sure everyone knows the truth and to stop the Kree from their imperialism.

Like… I don’t know how else to frame it except to say this movie is meant to put a mirror up to us as a society and be like OPEN YOUR EYES AND TAKE A STAND LIKE CAROL DID! LOOK AT WHAT YOU BELIEVE AND WHAT YOU ARE TOLD AND QUESTION IT BECAUSE PEOPLE WILL ALWAYS BE MORE IMPORTANT THAN ANY MILITARY OR GOVERNMENT AGENDA.

(Not to mention there’s been plenty of “military propaganda” in several other superhero movies but OF COURSE people want to bring it up as some sort of valid criticism now that the lead is a woman who won’t shut up about her beliefs just because she’s in a big blockbuster movie.)

someone: an alarming number of young girls are being pressured to contour and highlight their faces so that they look 10 years older, which is already not great, and then they take all their selfies with an app that makes their faces slimmer and their skin lighter and their eyes bigger and this is MAYBE not great for their self esteem

a grown adult, somehow: makeup is a choice, IDIOT, and Snapchat filters are ALL for FUN, I don’t ACTUALLY wanna look like a DOG haha………. society is fake and kids can just CHOOSE not to be influenced by the things that are thrown at them 24/7!!! i am very smart

“It’s not automatically funny to make an innocent cute character evil/rude/innapropriate” really only applies if you’re being edgy and saying Mario commits violent murder and abuses his brother.

However, drawing Isabelle in a shirt that says “shut the fuck,” saying Yoshi commits tax evasion, and Kirby in the street at night holding a knife outside your house… are all really fucking funny and in those cases, it’s really not deep or worth getting mad about.

michael scott saying “not gonna make this one” and driving away after trying to parallel park in a space that could fit 4 cars is probably the biggest mood i have ever seen

I remember reading some line in harry potter, some scene with a fat woman in it, and shes described along the lines as “a pile of pudding”. It struck me as odd at the time, but now when I look in the mirror, it just kind of echoes dejectedly in my mind. “Pile of pudding” or something like that will be the first thought I have whenever I see myself, whenever anyone else sees me.

If you write, or create art in any way: be kinder to fat people. Dont use their fat to show them being lesser or amoral, dont describe them in ways that mock them over food. Even if you think it’s a neutral description, ask yourself if it could be kinder. A child might end up with your words shaping the voice of their self hatred.

Doctors insisting that all women take pregnancy tests before having an X-ray is sexist and paternalistic. I’m a lesbian who’s never been sexually active, but I’m always required to take a pregnancy test “just in case.” This practice reflects the general culture of doctors not believing and trusting women, and it needs to change.

please. please do yourself a favor and read this incredibly well-written and thrilling article, written by a woman who willfully sat in a TGI fridays for 14 hours, and ordered far too many mozzerella sticks, in order to see whether or not “endless appetizers” were truly endless.

i am not kidding you when i say that it is the best thing i’ve read in a long time.

It’s so damn well written please read this

reading this article lowered my quality of life and worsened my mental health and you should absolutely still read it

In case you were not convinced by the description alone, here is an excerpt:

man i had a dream that magic was discovered in the near future

but it was like. shitty unbalanced fantasy magic. like within a few weeks people had wikis and guides up on how to glitch in immortality potions and time spells. people are just tossing homemade black holes around. i looked on the news and saw some speedrunner made it to the edge of the universe

I had this girl in my class and she was considered to be like really dumb. She’d ask a ton of doubts and questions in class, which everybody would consider to be “stupid"and “silly” and even the teachers would often taunt her but she’d never stop asking. But the thing was that she’d almost always top the class examinations and everyone was like???? They all thought she was cheating and stuff and obviously even the teachers were very biased because she wasn’t so ‘smart’ in class, and she was regularly accused of cheating. But nobody could prove that she was actually cheating but the whole class and teachers totally believed that she did. I’m pretty socially awkward so I never really talked to her, but she was leaving school this year and I was genuinely curious about how she was so good during exams and how she didn’t let everyone’s remarks affect her. She always used to sit and hang out with only one girl, and she told me that that friend of hers was severely socially anxious and she’d lag in studies because she couldn’t bring herself to ask doubts in class or ask for help from others. So they had this system where during lectures her friend would write down any question she had, and she would ask them for her. And I was just so touched??? Idk but it really changed the way I looked at people?? This girl endured taunts and jeers and borderline bullying for being “stupid” when she was actually really smart and could easily have refused to ask such doubts for her friend but she did?? And brushed off everything others would throw at her for her friend?? I was just, idk it just really changed me in some way.

This is also a commentary on ableism and how hurtful it is. One girl was so afraid of being seen as “stupid” that it stopped her from learning. And, judging by how her friend was treated for asking those questions, she was right to be afraid.

Ya know, teachers always said “don’t be afraid to ask questions.”

But do you know what happened when you asked questions, at least at my school(s)? They would say “I just taught this, weren’t you paying attention?” So of course that made many of the students feel like idiots because they asked for help, like they should have understood right away.

This girl did something so many of us were afraid to do, and it wasn’t even for herself.

Thor and Carol give off the same ‘dumb ass jock’ vibes, but like in a neutral good way, like they can bench press you and have one brain cell between them, but they also remember everyone’s birthdays and thank bus drivers

beautiful blond idiots. Also, neither of them are straight, thanks for coming for my TED talk
