Directing the third Harry Potter movie, Alfonso Cuaron came away with a strong impression of the red-haired but bashful Rupert Grint as the likely future star out of the Hogwarts trio.
John Hurt, who appeared in the first film, identified him as the “born actor”.
Matthew Lewis said: “Me and Dan have spoken about it and we both agreed, we can see Rupert going on and working the longest out of everyone.”
He’s a natural really. He’s just sort of got a simply truth about him that really works in front of the camera. The camera loves him.- Jonathan Lynn (director Wild Target)
“You might think Rupert was rather dozy, but he’s a glorious comic. He’ll be a name.” - Mike Newell
“Over the years in Harry Potter, I’d seen Rupert really grow as an actor. I saw him in the re-staging of Mojo. He was playing a speed-fuelled thug opposite Daniel Mays. They were that show’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. Rupert was utterly astonishing. So I knew he had what it takes to play this man who gets tangled up in a web of his own making as his trail of lies gets worse and worse. Rupert instantly made the part his own.”- Matt Lipsey (Sick Note)
“The most likely is Rupert. I think he’s the most natural actor. He’s the oldest of the three. I can imagine him moving on.” - David Thewlis
“People I think, underestimate Rupert as an actor; because he is so funny and he makes it look so easy.” - David Barron
“Success has not gone to his head. He is a natural comedian, and his future is what he makes of it. There will always be a need for actors of his great instinct and talent.”(..) “Rupert is just a natural comedian. I think he will always work.” - David Heyman
‘I’d seen the Potter films with my daughter and always thought Rupert was truthful as Ron Weasley. He noted that he’d spoken to David Yates, director of the final four Potter pictures. Rickson recalled that Yates had told him Grint had ‘hidden depths’ as a thespian. - Ian Rickson
“What a revelation he is! He’s a real anomaly for me in my work with understanding of actors. It’s very, very hard to transition from child actor to adult actor. Period. Because most of the time a child actor just has this unusual quality and then they grow out of it and whatever that this is gone and they have to reinvent themselves, as we all do. But strangely, he’s found himself as an adult. I’ve talked to him about this and I said, wow I don’t think I’ve ever seen this kind of transformation.” “He steals every scene he’s in.” - M Night Shyamalan
…In episode 8, watching Rupert. Rupert in episode 8 is kind of transformative. The way he takes that episode by the scruff of the neck and pulls you through it. That was a huge revelation for me as well. - Tony Basgallop (writer Servant)
I enjoyed SERVANT completely. Late to the party, but- this is a beautifully crafted, elegant show. Rupert Grint almost steals it, for me- as does the surgical staging and camera work in the M Night Shyamalan episodes.- Guillermo Del Toro
“We were going to have a Weasley reunion, but we haven’t got around to it yet, unless I just haven’t been invited,” he says, though he’s keeping a close eye on the career of Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley). “Rupes is a very good actor,” he says, as he polishes his glasses. - Mark Williams
