With the Bionicle GWP set I see some people talking about how we should buy it to convince Lego to make Bionicle G3.

They sure didn't learn the Bionicle history. What forces Lego to make Bionicle isn't giving them more money but putting the company into financial crisis 💸

I’ve been thinking about this post for awhile now, I just can’t get over it (and I mean this all to who made the image OP, not you for sharing it)

Like first off if the leaks hurt Mattel then maybe they should do something about them??? Retail employees sharing pictures of line names you can’t do much about and aren’t too bad but stock pictures being released early is an internal issue I’d think.

And if sales determine things that much, maybe a toy company that’s been around for 78 years should be able to figure out that if you want something to sell you actually need to make it available to buy. Every release of every line so far has been an absolute mess, and they aren’t sending most of the dolls outside of the US. Even Canada, the country that is *right* there is barely getting them let alone anyone on any other continent. Maybe their sales would improve if they stopped thinking all their customers are in the US???

I’m genuinely worried G3 is gonna go down the drain again and posts like these don’t help. But it’s going to go the same way as G2, with Mattel citing lack of sales and dwindling interest while ignoring the fact their treatment of the franchise are the main cause of that.

Sorry, I could never be a capitalist, I suffer from “wanting humans to have their basic needs met” disorder, where I care about people who aren’t me.

Someone once asked me if, assuming we got universal healthcare, I would be okay with the rise in “healthcare tourism” where people who are sick come to our country to get their medical bills taken care of and life-saving medical treatment cheaper than in their home countries. I was just like, yeah thats fine, I’d actually prefer it if 0 people died from preventable causes kept behind a paywall for no reason.

There’s something noxious in American culture where people are obsessed with being judge, jury & executioner. That people should somehow earn the inherent “right” to live.

We were, for hundreds of years, a slave society. In such a culture, things like having rights and freedoms, rather than being assumed, are explicitly virtues of being a member of the overseer group. In America, that’s white people, and especially wealthy white people.

This is why all of our public services that assist the poor are “means-tested” and punitive. This is why many people prattle on about the “deserving poor” versus “leeches”. And, it’s also why so much of our political discourse is centered around “protecting our freedom”: because in a slave society, freedom is a mark of privileged status, not a base level of human needs that society must provide for all.

it’s also an artifact of certain kinds of 17th-19th century Protestantism. we’re a country founded in part by Puritans, after all, who were great believers in the importance of Earning One’s Keep and Being Industrious and the idea that poverty- or ill health -could be a divine punishment for “moral impurity”

No one should feel obligated to spend money on non-essentials. Don’t try to coerce people into purchasing something they don’t 100% want.

It’s Mattel’s fault for putting out an inferior first wave, it’s not collectors fault for not buying them.

Don’t buy a doll “because the entire line might end if we don’t.”

Also, if G3 is primarily for children, and adult collectors are a negligible part of total revenue (10-15% of all girls product sales) then why does it matter if we buy them or not? 

The target market will decide its fate, adult collectors are not going to be the ones determining if it is a success or failure.

22$ vs 75$

HC dolls have the same quality as G1 playline dolls used to have but for more than three times the price

(Obviously not all playline dolls used to have a Sweet Screams, Gloom and Bloom, DOTD, etc like quality, but still none of the Skullectors are worth more than 50$)

This isn’t exactly a bad design, and I would’ve absolutely loved it if her body suit was also green. I love the idea of a Frankie doll with bright apple green as her main color.

But for $35 AT MOST, not $75.

At least the first wave of HC included hairbrushes and a purse.

I honestly dislike all three designs. And the fact you've done a line based on masquerade and masks and didnt choose Operetta, a character you insisted on always wearing a mask.

had a fucking hilarious dream that tumblr replaced the "block" function with the far funnier "glock" function, which did the exact same thing except whenever anyone blocked you a random bullet hole, like a png of a bullet hole, would appear on your blog. discourse blogs were unreadable bc you'd go to the page and the sheer amount of bullet hole pngs stacked over the blogs obscured everything. "well its mattel, so quality is not expected" is such a bad excuse towards any criticism of the monster high dolls. these are great dolls being held back because this company refuses to up their quality. i want g3 mh and skullector to be around for a long time, but if mattel wont listen to criticism im afraid that wont be the case.

yeah you're beloved g1 also reused accessories. i heart fashion/shoes/accessories were literally all reused stuff and people seem to love them. also don't get me started about how many times this pair of shoes has been used...

The reuse of accessories and shoes is more of an issue for G3 because;

1. It’s only the second year of the brand’s existence and they’re ALREADY putting out dolls in print minidresses with recycled shoes and accessories.

If this is 2020s Mattel putting in their most effort, I don’t have high hopes for any future lines.

2. The body face, shoe, and accessory sculpts are significantly more boring.

Yes G1 did reuse that sneaker mold too much, but it also had lines where every single character got a distinct and new shoe sculpt (Sweet 1600, Ghouls Rule, Gloom and Bloom and Freak Du Chic for example)

G1 also usually re-colored the shoes in interesting colors, I was so happy that I Heart Fashion Cleo had a translucent black version of her Anubis heels, because those were only ever used in the Skull Shores Target-exclusive 5-pack, and I wasn’t gonna buy a 5-pack just for Cleo.

The lows of G1 were soothed by its highs for the most part.

But G3 doesn’t have any highs, it’s aggressively mediocre.

Signature Cleo and Ghoulia are my favorite G3 designs but even then they’re not like “wow stunning” just “ok these are pretty good”. Mid AF.

she has so many dolls and yet not a lot of variation in terms of her face 😭

i think this also goes for the other g3 dolls as well but i’ve mostly noticed it on draculaura (probably bc there’s just. so many of her)
