The fact that absolutely no-one on tumblr is talking about the Emilia Perez movie is just.
It has everything this hellsite loves. The music. The queerness. The Selena Gomez. It has Goncharov vibes but make it Mexican. Wake up y'all.
EDIT : Not gonna delete the post because it's good to let people know of what's wrong with the movie. Look at the tags and notes to learn more about the issues surrounding the movie 👉
(and everyone chill and educate people before you attack them)
Reasons why this movie is hot garbage:
- The director does not speak spanish or english, all the dialogue is google translated french to spanish and it absolutely shows (Latam is collectively saying wtf)
- The director decided he "did not need to research Mexico" as he "knew enough" leading to racist stereotypes
- The casting director said they "had to hire Americans" because "there is no talent in Mexico"
- The film was not filmed in Mexico, it was filmed on a sound stage in France
- Selena was hired for her star power and "latinidad" but her spanish is utter ass, like, has become a meme on Mexican tiktok because of how bad it is (a very famous Mexican actor/director called her out and she played victim, he had to apologise)
- On the star power, the director is pretending to "not know who she was beforehand" but the role was changed from a Mexican woman to an American who moved to Mexico to adapt to her terrible spanish
- The main character is a Mexican narco who transitions, this role is played by a Spanish actress, Spanish accent and Mexican accent is WIDLY DIFFERENT, the equivalent would be to have a British actor using their british accent while playing an American
- Narcos are kind of the cause for disappeared people in Mexico and the story goes that after she transitions she wants to help what she caused in the first place but now with less power ?
- The spanish actress scolded Mexicans for being put off by her playing a Mexican and not being Mexican by implying that suffering is human, idk her tweet is weird [please note that Spain colonised Mexico and there is a lot of racism from Spanish people towards Mexicans/Latam in general so, a Spanish actress shutting down Mexicans for their feelings with examples based on Spanish artists is condescending]
- Zoe's accent is also ass although she's suposed to be a lawyer who has been living in Mexico for 20 years ?
- The film is kind of zionist ? Paints Israel as a trans person's haven for sex reassignment surgery so a bit of pinkwashing to boot
- The film will not be shown in Mexico until after awards season because Mexicans and Latam in general are super put off by the whole thing.
It sucks that a trans story line with a trans actress is so wrapped up in a bunch of bullshit racism but, it is. All of the praise coming out of Cannes and Hollywood is pretty obviously Americans and europeans who DO NOT know Spanish because, for us Spanish speakers it is incredibly ass, like, doesn't make sense ass. The director (European) the main actress (European) and the other two mains (Americans) are not hearing any critisisim and being pretty condescending towards Mexicans.
Watch it, don't watch it, I'm not your mom but, this is just a psa.
Reblog so English speakers learn about this. Emilia Pérez is an insult to Mexico from its script to its casting to its advertisement. This is a perfect example of colonizers exploiting our suffering for entertainment while giving nothing back.
This is why we may never make peace with the French
Just letting all my mutuals know that F Emilia Perez , it’s worst that Gustavo Fring Spanish ,
But what they both have in common is that aparrently they can’t hire someone to translate from English to Spanish that it’s not google drive or ChatGPT
I had never heard of this movie before this video popped up on my YouTube recommended (it’s a pretty basic run through of the film’s issues). Aside from all the very obvious things wrong with this movie, the other thing that sucks about it is that it’s very much Oscar bait. It doesn’t exist as a film so much as a grab for awards. The video I linked compares it to Traffic, wildly regarded as the worst Best Picture winner in the history of the Oscars (but could potentially be the second worst in a few months).
