My favorite thing is that Europe is spooky because it’s old and America is spooky because it’s big

“The difference between America and England is that Americans think 100 years is a long time, while the English think 100 miles is a long way.” –Earle Hitchner

A fave of mine was always the american tales where people freaked out because ‘someone died in this house’ and all the europeans would go ‘…Yes? That would be pretty much every house over 40 years old.’

‘…My school is older than your entire town.’

‘Sorry, you think *how far* is okay to travel for a shopping trip?’

*American looks up at the beams in a country pub* ‘Uh, this place has woodworm, isn’t that a bit unsafe?’ ‘Eh, the woodworm’s 400 years old, it’s holding those beams together.’

A few years ago when I was in college I did a summer program at Cambridge aimed specifically at Americans and Canadians, and my year it was all Americans and one Australian.  We ended the program with a week in Wessex, and on the last day as we all piled onto the bus in Salisbury (or Bath? I can’t remember), the professors went to the front to warn us that we wouldn’t be making any stops unless absolutely necessary.  We’re headed to Heathrow to drop off anyone flying off the same day, then back to Cambridge.

“All right, it’s going to be a long bus ride, so make sure you’re prepared for that.”

We all brace ourselves.  A long bus ride?  How long?  We’re Americans; a long bus ride for us is a minimum of six hours with the double digits perfectly plausible.  We can handle a twelve hour bus ride as long as we get a bathroom break.

The answer.  “Two hours.”

Oh.

English people trying to travel around Australia and wildly underestimating distance are my favourite thing

a tour guide in France told my school group that a particular cathedral wouldn’t interest us much because “it’s not very old; only from the early 1600s”

to which we had to respond that it was still older than the oldest surviving European-style buildings in our country

China is both old and big. I had some Chinese colleagues over; we were discussing whether they wanted to see the Vasa ship (hugely expensive war ship which sank on it’s maiden voyage after 12 min). They asked if it was old, I said “not THAT old” (bearing in mind they were Chinese) “it’s from the 1500s.” To my surprise they still looked impressed, nodding enthusiatically. Then I realised I’d forgotten something: “…I mean it’s from the 1500s AFTER the birth of Christ” and they went “oh, AFTER…”.

My dad’s favorite quote from various tours in Italy was “Pay no attention to the tower – it was a [scornful tone] tenth century addition.”

My last boss was Chinese, and she said when her parents came to visit her from Beijing they pronounced Chicago “A very nice village.”

European problems include:

- Missing a turn and now you need to cross the border;

- Towns built 500 to 800 years ago with really small roads where cars can barely fit;

- That road/parking lot/etc they were building is gonna take twice the time to finish because they found Roman ruins AGAIN!

I mean I kinda get the first one. But crossing a border’s literally like crossing city limits in the US coz…freedom of movement.

Except Britain coz of lmao 😂

Feeling nostalgic for the hideous early days of 3D animation. So reliving my Millennial childhood by watching War Planets - Shadow Raiders.

After that it’s Battletech, and then Botmaster.

Any other recommendations?

Avatar

Can't go wrong with Mainframe Entertainment in that category, so my suggestions are ReBoot, Transformers: Beast Wars, and Transformers: Beast Machines. But if you want to kick it really old school, they also did the music video for Dire Straits' Money For Nothing. (They've also done a hell of a lot of direct to video Barbie CGI animations.)

For a non Mainframe example of early hideous CGI would be the QuestWorld segments of The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest.

Where else can I get recommendations for obscure, early cgi, children’s cartoons? And more easily here than Google too.

Tumblr.

The Google for things most ppl are too embarrassed to ask about.

The phenomenon of female lions growing manes is of course a beautiful analogy for trans rights.

But it just occurred to me that it’s also an absolutely batshit example of evolution. Coz it mostly happens in prides without a male it’s basically.

Agatha: Oh shit! Henry’s dead, we need to scare off predators & other males. Sheila, quick!
Sheila: I’m on it *ngrrrrrr* *pop*
Agatha: Beautiful.

AI and homework?

Just go back to handwritten. They copy the AI generated one?

Who cares? They just taught themselves.

I know it’s a cliché at this point, but we had to stop fucking for like 10mins last night coz she said something silly & we were laughing too hard. I love her so much, the ability to be yourselves and lose all insecurities.

Then we started up again and I pounded the ever-loving fuck out of her.

Look, this is probably going to end up as an unpopular post, because God knows the level of brainrot capitalism and fast consumption caused in people's brains, but I'd rather not get TV shows for a while if it means writers get their rights defended and recognized.

Entertainment can't come at the cost of fair pay, healthy work environment and ethical practices.

Avatar

I am so fucking behind on my shows that honestly, this strike is a blessing.

Avatar

And honestly like? The writers’ reasons for going on strike are the same as my reasons for being happy they’re striking.

Churn churn churn is the industry motto now.

“We need 2 new Star Wars series, 3 MCU ones and four Disney movies next month. They’re being worked to death and the market’s being oversaturated coz of end-stage capitalism’s obsession with shooting itself in the dick in the futile pursuit of infinite increased profits.

On the west coast for a holiday. Love watching the swifts doing their aerial acrobatics. Reminds me of how much I loved watching them, growing up on the east coast.

But we don’t see them there anymore.

Biodiversity loss I’m unlucky enough to be able to see with my own eyes in my lifetime 😔

old gods are waking

I need everyone to stop what they're doing and freak out with me.

THIS IS A PLANT GROWN FROM A 32,000 YEAR OLD SEED!!

Do you understand how unbelievably amazing this is?!

THEY FOUND THE SEED IN A FROZEN SQUIRREL

They what???

That damn squirrel again

That has to be the absolute dankest weed.

I’m gonna smoke it, then eat the ancient cheese & butter sandwich for the munchies, washed down with the sarcophagus juice.

cool shit

I would give my right testicle to have this so that in 2023 in public I could tell ppl “Wait a sec, I’ve gotta check my email” just to absolutely confuse the ever-loving fuck out of them, then never mention anything about it.

just wanted a visual demonstration since I was talking about how much I love them

Mules are like horses with the self destruct button removed

...do you mean the 'self preservation instinct' removed????

Avatar

No, absolutely not. It’s the opposite. Mules will straight up refuse to do things if they don’t have the confidence that they can complete it. This is where the term “stubborn as a mule” comes from. A horse would attempt these feats and break its weak little ankles and roll over and kill its rider. Mules do this because they know they can. That’s also why mules and donkeys are used as mounts around the Grand Canyon, they’re both sure-footed and stubborn and will refuse to do things that put them and the rider in danger when a horse would listen to the call of the void and just do it. Donkeys are less domesticated than mules, less dependent on humans and more self-assured, this is why they can be harder to train but also why they have such great self-preservation skills. A mule inherits those traits from its father.

Changed the visible name of my airpods to EarHoleFriendz🙂

I value truth!

Am I the only one massively unimpressed by the whole “AI” fad?

Like everything the geek/tech/NFT/crypto bros and Elon fanboys are gushing over is just so…meh 🤷‍♂️

It’s all just Siri v2.0 or a dozen things tech was already capable of rolled into one.

“Ooooh but it can explain complex scientific principles”

So can Wikipedia? It’s just not phrased in a very inhuman human voice that makes it harder to understand.

“Oooooh it can write an original essay.”

No it can compile templates to form a mishmash of essays other ppl wrote. Which I used Google to do plenty in college.

Like hey…be excited about new tech, whatever. But calling ChatGPT “real AI” is like me saying the soldiers in original Call of Duty were “real AI” coz they could simulate stuff real soldiers do & we just decided to call the programming AI.
