It’s almost as if Tolkien personally witnessed one of the bloodiest wars in human history and then used that to fuel his writing.

I think a surprising amount of writers don’t realize that tragedies are supposed to be cathartic. They’re intended to result in a purging of emotion, a luxurious cry; the sorrow caused by a great tragedy is akin to fear caused by a good horror movie – it’s a “safe” sorrow, one that is actually satisfying to the audience. It can still be beautiful! It’s isn’t supposed to just be salting the earth so nothing can grow.

But that’s how you get grimdark: writers who don’t realize that they’re supposed to be doing something with the audience instead of to the audience.

#i once heard a lecture where someone said that the great appeal of tragedy is to see terrible things happen to people you’re supposed to#empathize with and see yourself in#and that the catharsis comes from seeing someone’s life go horribly wrong and still have the author hold your hand and tell you#‘this story mattered. even though it had a sad ending it still mattered. even if you don’t succeed your attempts matter’#grimdark tells you that the world sucks and nothing you do matters#well-written tragedy tells you that sometimes the world sucks but everything you do matters so so much#your story is still worth telling even if you never achieve that happy ending#or if you lose it along the way#people have inherent value and their stories deserve to be told no matter if they turn out okay or not#and in a reality that has no concept of ‘fair’ that shit just hits good man!!! feels good!!!!! it’s COMFORTING

The only thing I need tumblr to do is to get like... cool with the idea you can hire people here to do commissions for you and to like.. consider monetary support for artists cuz one of the reasons and the biggest reason I moved to twitter in the first place is because people there buy my art. I make a living there doing art. And the vibe here is **we don't do that here** If you want artists to be here and do art you gotta be okay with the concept of artists trying to make money. I hate capitalism as much as the next person but I'm also 30 years old living with my fucking parents because I can't pay for a 1 bedroom apartment. Artists are not 'big business'. We're not Disney. We're just people trying to make a living or some money for groceries and shit.

Addendum: Babies I love you and I'm not saying you need to spend money you need for groceries or bills on art you can't afford. I'm saying that if you want artists to like stay here you gotta be okay with artists making money. With artists charging more than 20 dollars for commissions, with artists reblogging their own commission slots a hundred times over, with artists listing adoptables. With artists who work for big studios joining the website. You gotta accept a degree of 'consumerism' because artists who make stuff are often also a small business trying to make money to eat. If you wanna go the extra mile and support artists the best thing you can do is reblog stuff. If you see fanart you dig, hit that reblog show it to your friends, if you see original stuff you dig, hit the reblog, share it with people. If you can't afford monetary support that's fine but perhaps someone who follows you sees that art and goes "Well fuck here's my wallet lets go get some art"

Well we don’t know the value of an Algerian life in France but we sure now know the reward for killing one.
