I thiiiink that King Adam may have instigated this, and that he is still the original King, immortal and slowly having alterations done to his body over decades to see if they can remove all vulnerability. I was thinking about the film Annihilation in the context of Twig. I don't think the effects of the refracting zone thingy are anywhere near what a primordial can do. If anything it could be an academy weapon, but the academy's version would possibly act a bit more quickly.
