This might be my favorite fic that I've written so far! I'd be honored if you checked it out.

Maverick has spiraled down to a very low place. Although he was cleared of wrongdoing in the accident that caused Goose's death, he still feels that he bears responsibility for the tragedy. He's ready to leave the Navy to keep from hurting anyone else when Slider finds him hiding in an off-base bar and drags him back to the housing unit he's been sharing with Iceman during Top Gun. Maverick has a breakdown and Ice and Slider try to put the pieces of Maverick's broken heart back together. Maverick and Ice are also dancing around feelings that they're afraid to address. Maverick is left with a huge choice: does he stay in the Navy or start a new life as a civilian?

I wrote this fic because I really wanted to develop the relationship of Ice & Mav & Slider in the wake of Goose's death and Maverick's inquiry. I also wanted to write how well Ice and Slider work together as a team, even when that means helping out a classmate who is struggling. Slider and Ice are so fun to write and I wanted to give them some more complexity and to highlight their intelligence and competency. Icemav does start to develop as Maverick recovers, but this fic is pre-slash. There are nuggets where I can imagine readers seeing pre-slimav or even pre-slicemav, too.

I put warning tags on this fic because Maverick does self-harm and spends a fair amount of time in a rough mental state. I believe I wrote about the incidents without graphic detail, but I know readers appreciate warnings. More detailed explanation is in the fic's end notes if you want a heads up before reading. Of course, you can always ask me directly.

Guess what? I just posted a part two to this story! And I even plan a third installment. I couldn't get this story out of my head and I got some comments that seemed game so here we are. Ask and ye shall (sometimes) receive more.

Now it's Top Gun graduation day and Maverick is still dealing with guilt, grief, and gay awakening. Slider and Ice have family at the party, so there are OCs for this chapter that I hope add some flavor to Ice and Slider.

Chapter three is up! This one took a while for a variety of reasons. But I'm happy to say that I've wrapped up this story and posted the last chapter. I hope you enjoy the resolution 🙂

It's time for the Layton rescue but Ice is worried about Maverick flying in combat when he hasn't even succeeded with training hops. Can he work through his guilt and grief to support his friends in the air during a critical encounter?

Later, Maverick has to make decisions about his future. What does he want from his career and his relationship with Ice?

I can't wait to hear what you think! I still like the first chapter as a stand-alone fic, but I'm also happy with the development of a whole story.

As a self proclaimed Slider artist and now on season 7 of Brooklyn 99, I have found that Jake has a lot of similar features to Slider (Iwas wondering why tf he looked so familiar when I started watching)

AO3 does ‘and’ filters.

You don’t filter for M&E. You filter for not the other stuff.

I have never seen so many users clearly baffled by and too skittish to push buttons/toggles that are very clearly meant to be used.

If a trusted website has a button and you don’t immediately know or understand what it does, push it. Check out every drop down, every link, every configuration imaginable. Be adventurous. Fuck around and find out. If it breaks the website, they shouldn’t have had that button in the first place. Not on you. Indulge your curiosity instead of complaining it doesn’t do something it absolutely does if you poke around a little.

You’re not going to get a bad grade in filtering by using interface features from AO3, I promise.

Look, there are library systems that don’t have filters as good as AO3. You have to learn how to use Boolean operators (AND OR NOT) and construct a proper query to exclude in several academic databases, and AO3 just performs “NOT” for you by clicking a button.

Do you know how many grad students would love to have the kind of power you have with AO3 in filters?

Ao3 filters are amazing. You can filter out ratings, you can filter out characters or pairings, you can filter out specific tags (as long as it’s an official tag)! (Type it in under “other tags to exclude”)

This is why the antis complaining about seeing content they don’t like on Ao3 is so frustrating. If something squicks you out, filter it, and you never have to see it again! Voila! Or even if it is just something you don’t like. I have High School AUs filtered out because I just don’t like them! It’s an amazing system and makes it so easy to curate your experience.

There are in fact tutorials on AO3 for how to use filters! They’re a little difficult to find because they’re admin blog posts, but they exist!

They’re here (basics), here (search within results #1), and here (search within results #2), for anyone who needs them, and not only do they cover the checkboxes, they also cover how to filter for things that aren’t part of the checkbox list using the search within results field!

These tutorials have saved my sanity so many times when I want (or want to avoid) very specific things in my search, and I highly recommend them.

ALSO!!

For those who like finding fics for others - or remember reading a fic and don’t want to sort through hundreds (or more) of your bookmarks and you don’t use bookmark tags (like me?).

USE. FILTERS.

At the very least you can shorten the list of fics to scroll through.

I never used to leave comments but since I got into the habit of commenting on everything i enjoy it's been incredible. Especially when the author gets back to me about it and we get to have a discussion of what other ideas they had. One writer replied to my comment with a 5 paragraph essay detailing the Floorplan of the building the characters lived in and it was incredible

Anyways this is all to say that if you find a fic that just makes you want to scream from the rooftops, leave a comment saying that to the author and maybe they will join you and you can scream incoherently together
