I honestly think that the lack of non-sexual nudity in public spaces has done horrific damage to American society.
We deeply struggle to understand the natural diversity of bodies because we only see naked bodies in a sexual context. We are taught that seeing nudity is somehow inherently harmful, especially to children. We struggle to differentiate between sexually suggestive and sexually explicit material.
It fucks up the way people think about and talk about sex ed. It fucks up the way people think about and talk about breast feeding. It fucks up the way people think about and talk about queer folks. It feeds into fatphobia and ableism and is all rooted in this deeply harmful puritanism.
Like, I need people to understand that seeing a bare titty in public is not going to hurt a child. Seeing a man in a banana hammock isn't inherently traumatizing. I would argue, in fact, that adults treating those things as dangerous and gross and scary is going to do way more damage to a kid's psychology than seeing the nudity in the first place.
These type of additions are vexing. Ostensibly supportive but can't help but make sure you know they're also Weird about nudity by making it about consent, doubling down on the idea that there's no such thing as nonsexual nudity, it's an action that willing partners need to consent to first. Does the breastfeeding parent need my consent to feed their child? When you see someone wearing practically see-through yoga pants, is your thought that they should have asked your consent before going outside? this is an exact example of how it fucks up the way you think, that you could read all of op and instinctually start thinking in the language of sexual assault, as if this post was about flashers
Okay this is fascinating to me because I don't think of consent as inherently sexual.
Like. If there's an expectation that going to my local coffee shop I might see someone breastfeeding, then yeah, I am consenting to seeing breastfeeding by going there. By going out in public where people wear leggings, I am consenting to seeing someone in see through leggings. But that, to me, is genuinely the same thing as like, if I go to a park that allows off leash dogs, I'm consenting to being around dogs that are off leash. Or if I go to a bar, I'm consenting to being around drunk people. (Which doesn't inherently mean I consent to being harassed by them, or even talking to them.)
There's nothing sexual about any of the above, and none of it really impacts the other person/people/dogs, just me. Do I consent to being in this situation? No? Okay I should leave/not go there.
This is genuinely the first time in my life I've realized maybe other people always thing of consent as a sexual thing and I think that's not great, actually, because there are a lot of non-sexual situations where consent is very much relevant.
And to be clear I'm not disagreeing with anything in this post. My addition is totally tangential.
So, here is where I think this gets..... sticky.
When we talk about consent, we are GENERALLY talking about things that affect us/our bodies directly, sexual or not. I consent to donate blood. I consent to getting my ears pierced. I consent to a medical exam. And if I don't consent, those *actions* stop.
When we then use the language of consent to talk about other people's behaviors in public that do not involve us in any way beyond like... discomfort? We hear bigots say things like "I didn't consent to see 2 men holding hands in public" and etc, and the intent is often to say "these things that make me feel uncomfortable need to stop" rather than the person just... removing themselves from that setting. They want the *actions* to stop. When a reasonable person would recognize that 99.99% of the time, the actions are fine, it's just that they are uncomfortable.
And it gets especially sticky when people have been raised to believe that certain actions or taboos that create this discomfort are MORAL issues. I think, as a culture, we are also really bad about just...being uncomfortable. Using the language of consent implies "this action that makes me uncomfortable, so the action needs to stop."
So when we talk about public spaces and other peoples actions in those spaces which may or may not make someone uncomfortable, I dont think consent is the right language to be using. I'm not CONSENTING to seeing a topless woman at the beach, but I might understand that it is a possibility. It is a setting in which this might occur, and going there is my choice.
In the US, nudity has been SO stigmatized that in a public space even partial nudity is wildly transgressive and can feel very threatening to people. But someone violating that social expectation isn't inherently violating your consent, just your expectations in a way that might illicit discomfort.
Reporters drop bombshell, reveal the names of the 10 House Republicans who attended a secret meeting in which they tried to pressure Mike Pence into helping Trump steal Biden’s win by refusing the certify the Electoral College vote on January 6.
Their names are:
Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga) Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) Scott Perry (R-Pa.) Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) Brian Babin (R-Texas) Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.) Andy Harris (R-Md.) Jody Hice (R-Ga.)
This new revelation spells DISASTER for everyone in that list — putting them in the cross hairs of Special Counsel Jack Smith’s federal investigation into Trump for trying to criminally overturn the 2022 presidential election.
But it gets even worse for them, because several of them requested a pardon from Trump, which can help prove their criminal guilt if Special Counsel Jack Smith decides to charge them as Trump’s co-conspirators.
Is it just me or does having a positive interaction with a stranger scratch a very particular itch? I think it's the reassurance that the world is not split solely into people who already love you and people who never will.
Oo, interesting
For being a shadow and two dandelions, that is a surprisingly unnerving image.

It’s been so long since i said it but if you live with homophobic/transphobic parents no matter if you’re a minor or a young adult don’t come out <3
I don’t care if you guys do it to feel validated by other young gays, your comminity doesn’t want you putting themselves in harm’s way just to “live their truth” we want you alive
“It’s 2022 it’s not that big deal anymore!!” If your parents are biggots it matters, 2022 is not discriminatory free, if you’re able to hide it from them don’t think it twice and risk it all because your gay friends told you you weren’t really gay if you hadn’t come out
I’d honestly argue that - regardless of your age - if you would be in danger from people you live with or your well-being would be threatened, don’t come out to them. (Especially when various older people have had to move back in with parents because of the economy/COVID/etc.)
Homophobic parents paying for college? Hang in there and get your degree. Setting up your awesome new life and living on your own will be a whole lot easier if you can avoid having to deal with student loans.
you do not owe anyone a truth they will hurt you for.
Fever is a hilarious immune response. Our bodies tell the disease “hey, wanna see which one of us dies of overheating first? No? Too bad.” and honestly they’re not even the winners a decent chunk of the time but it works often enough that we never evolved it away or anything. Fantastic work.
this reply is killing me
Um, vus?
at some point you have to realize that you actually have to read to understand the nuance of anything. we as a society are obsessed with summarization, likely as a result of the speed demanded by capital. from headlines to social media (twitter being especially egregious with the character limit), people take in fragments of knowledge and run with them, twisting their meaning into a kaleidoscope that dilutes the message into nothing. yes, brevity is good, but sometimes the message, even when communicated with utmost brevity, requires a 300 page book. sorry.

The way I've already seen uncountable "Netflix is hiring!" Ads. They're really just gonna hire scabs and pretend the WGA strike isn't happening....
This is a reminder to anyone who wants to go into screenwriting. This is not an opportunity to get your foot in the door. Do not take any writing jobs during the strike. This includes freelance or “script editing” jobs.
You will be a scab. Scabs are barred from union membership. By crossing the picket line to get your foot in the door you’ll be burning one of the most important bridges in your life. You will actively be harming your future job prospects.
This strike will end one day. Those writers who are out picketing will reenter the writers room and start producing work with the legal and financial protections and guarantees they’re fighting for, and you will not be among their ranks. You will be a scab. A traitor.
A lack of union membership will harm your prospects job wise. Do not scab. Knowledge of your scabbing, traitorous ways will cost you your ability to make friends in the industry. Do not scab. Support the WGA as they fight for your rights. Do. Not. Scab.

To everybody needing it:
- I’m really sorry to hear your day sucked
- I’m not sure if tomorrow will be better for you, but it’ll be a reset
- You’ll find the courage you need to do That Thing
- You are perfectly okay. You’re doing just fine…more than just fine, even. There’s nothing wrong with you.
- Take care of yourself tonight. It’ll be okay.
