GUYS i just saw this sc and i don’t know if anyone has talked about this but i think there’s some serious symbolism going on in this so lemme explain under the cut

luca is placed on the side with the open, starry sky. he’s also looking up toward said sky. this is a representation of his curiosity, his desire to move forward and far away, his excitement surrounding the unknown. it’s also much darker than the right side of the image, which to me is a nod to how unfamiliar the territory is (i.e. he is literally and figuratively “in the dark” about the rest of the world). still there is no fear attached to this. he wants to explore because for him, it means finally escaping the suffocating upbringing he knows so well. he can finally see things through his own eyes and not the selective eyes of his mother. the books he’s holding is also open—he’s open minded—etc you see where i’m headed.

HOWEVER alberto is placed on the right side in front of the townscape. this is much more grounding scenery. it’s more earthly, and thus more familiar and safe to alberto. there’s even a light on which could be a representation of knowledge, familiarity, or emotional warmth. alberto is looking at the ground with his fists balled, very closed off in comparison to luca. he’s not even looking up. alberto repeatedly grapples for control and understanding throughout the movie, especially in terms of his relationship to luca. his whole idea of running away (or scootering away, if you will) comes from both a fear of addressing his issues and thus emotionally progressing AND his desire to be in complete control of his feelings. alberto has this scenery because he doesn’t like such a lack of control or knowledge (this part is something we obviously see with how he tries to come off as an uber-genius expert to luca. literally in this scene he’s brushing off the idea that what he said about the stars is wrong—and giulia, an uncontrollable force, is not only correct but also has luca’s primary attention in the moment). when luca is met with the unknown, he is excited and open. when alberto is, he feels dumb, pushed aside, and wrong; so he tries to overcompensate.

now i hear you saying, but clover, alberto’s whole thing is leaving and going off on his own to new worlds. CORRECT! but you must understand that it’s luca proposing ideas here. alberto needs to be the one in charge, the expert, the leader, because he’s had no control over his life or image up until he met this newbie (side note: alberto’s dad most likely attacked his intelligence, bulldozing his self-esteem and birthing alberto’s coping mechanism of false confidence). this moment in the pic is where seeing the world stops being a way of alberto controlling his own life/emotions but instead becomes luca leaving him and going on his own chosen path (luca’s independence = alberto being alone again). this shift in attitude toward the unknown is shown in the end of the movie when alberto chooses to stay in portorosso. he’s afraid of luca doing his own thing at school, afraid of feeling stupid and outcasted if he goes to said school, but also… he’s built a home for himself in portorosso. that’s something he’s never had anywhere before. he stops being so attached to this idea of freedom and making his own decisions because he’s realized how great it can be to stay in one spot and fill in the gaps of his childhood. also he’s gotten off the island, which is a symbol for moving forward—and alberto then sees that he doesn’t need to run away to get over his past. in fact, maybe it’s nicer to get better while staying in one place, because then he’s actually solved something rather than running from it.

anyway this is something i think about a lot bc i love taking simple things and making them complicated ❤️ next episode will be explaining how alberto’s past led to his “first impression” scene and the almost parental role he takes on in relation to luca
