why kat isn't happy with ethan
I feel like Kat as a character is SO rarely talked about because everyone is either too busy focusing on the Maddy/Cassie/Nate situation or the Rue/Jules drama.
But TODAY I am going to be talking about our girl Kat and her character arc throughout Euphoria.
Kat, in her heart of hearts, was and is, a Tumblr girly. She spent the majority of her formative years reading and writing fanfiction. She lived in a world of smut, angst, and soulmates. Her entire view on love was shaped from the perspective of fanfiction.
I think this is why we see her self-sabotage her growing relationship with Ethan all throughout Season 1. She thinks a stable, loving, nurturing guy cannot possibly be real. Having a normal relationship was out of the realm of possibility for her because she was so used to reading and writing about dramatized fictional relationships.
Her entire view on what love looked like was shaped by living through fictional characters. I think this caused her to always romanticize the intense ups and downs of relationships, and sort of see that as the norm.
This is also combined with her need to be viewed as desirable by all the men in her life. She would spend a lot of time doing her "Kitten Queen" persona by talking to random dudes online, and also hooking up with older guys who already graduated from high school. I think this part of her character arc was supposed to represent her debilitating desire for male validation and attention.
I think all of these factors warped her perspective on things, and causes her to steer away from pursuing a stable, healthy relationship with Ethan.
So when she finally gets together with Ethan in Season 2, she feels this overwhelming emptiness. Like, damn this it? This is boring.
Because at the bottom of her heart, she still craves the intense romances, the rollercoaster highs and lows, and the passionate angst she reads and writes about in her fanfiction. She still wants the excitement and uncertainty of her one night stands, meaningless hookups, and online dates she had with all those men in Season 1.
I am curious about the direction they will take her character in Season 2, though.
