I have heard this from white Australian kids without a single drop of ancestry from Aboriginal, Pacific Islander, Chinese or any other non-European ethnicity. Not even a bit of Greek, Sicilian, Maltese or Hispanic that would make you go "maybe". They do this while standing on Yuggera land that their ancestors colonised off my mother's people without a trace of irony or self-reflection. The hypocrisy of those twerps is infuriating.

A few years ago I was writing an article on the mining industry's destruction of Aboriginal culture in Australia. For research I went to a big mining conference in Perth's Fortescue centre, predominantly full of disgustingly corporate money-hungry old white men. They came together to do damage control: Rio Tinto had just blown up Juukan Gorge, a 46,000-year-old Aboriginal heritage site in the Pilbara, to expand one of their iron ore mines. They were facing backlash and wanted to discuss its broader implications for profit, and how to protect their reputation better next time. They started with an acknowledgment of country, "We wish to acknowledge this conference is taking place on Wadjuk land of the Noongar nation, and pay our respects to the elders past, present and emerging." Then they got straight to the business of how to fuck over Aboriginal people and blow up their land as cheaply as possible.

It's a form of regulatory ritualism. It becomes meaningless background noise to people who don't care. We need to care first, then acknowledge.

Sadly when Candice thinks she has proof and shows her mom, Tumblr's search function tells her they can't find any records of her own post.

The constant rolling disaster that is Overwatch's game development aside, what really perplexes me about how Blizzard is handing the broader franchise is their continual insistence that a canon narrative exists in spite of their equally continual refusal to tell anyone what it is.

Like, okay, the events of the games aren't canon. Fair enough: the games are multiplayer-only, and you can't account for player actions.

Oh, and the animated short films aren't canon either – they're properly understood as in-universe propaganda, not depictions of actual events. That's a little high concept for you guys, but fine.

But surely the comics are canon, right? Well, no; some of the comics (we're not telling you which ones) were canon at one point, but the writing team has decided to go in a different direction.
