Wise Girl on Fire

@wisegirlonfire

Hey! I'm Ananya! *insert witty description here* I'm neither wise nor on fire tbh - just a cool username. Here's a f̶u̶n̶n̶y̶ shitty poem: Roses are red, Violets are blue, If you're a procrastinating internet addict engulfed in self-doubt, Congrats! You've found someone just like you! Also: doodlesndrabbles.tumblr.com

the assassination of franz ferdinand was actually the most hilariously botched assassination attempt of all time though like i can’t even explain to you how badly it went i mean there were six guys and the first one chickened out and the second one forgot to factor in the delay on a hand grenade so it exploded like three cars past the archduke’s so the guy took a cyanide pill and threw himself into a river, but the cyanide was expired and the river was six inches deep so the police just pulled him out and took him off to jail and then everyone else basically gave up and headed home, and then the driver of the archduke took a wrong turn and the car stalled next to the last of the six guys, and he was just like “what a crazy random happenstance” and started world war one

You forgot to mention that the last guy only happened to kill Franz because he had just come out of the sandwich shop where the car stopped

It is obvious to even the most casual observer that this particular event has been meddled with by at least two groups of time travelers trying to change history.  Please, if you invent a time machine, leave the assassination of Ferdinand alone; the space-time continuum there is already showing obvious cracks from the strain.

i really hate what weaponised feminity has done to this site because someone will write, like, an informative post about how damaging the beauty industry is or a criticism on the fact that the makeup industry is telling literal children that they need to have perfect contour and wear revealing clothing to be pretty, and someone on here that is unfamiliar with the concept of critical thinking will make a comment like “lmao this bitch is mad that me and a bunch of 13 year olds have better brows than she does.” and it’ll be seen as super witty and funny by a bunch of you because so many people on this site still think that 2014 “eyeliner sharp enough to kill a man posts” are peak feminism

The “Fair” Treatment of Women in Modern Bollywood

Let’s talk colorism.

Discriminating against dark skin colors while praising light skin colors undoubtedly damages and divides our society. We like to believe that colorism is a strictly Western issue, but let us not forget how prevalent and insidious colorism is in Southeast Asian nations. India’s entertainment hub, Bollywood, is indeed guilty of perpetuating this glorification of white skin - deeming it pure, sexy, and a symbol of high class (or in this case, caste).

Bollywood has churned out images of light-skinned, almost white, actresses time and time again. When producers default white skin as the standard in their movies, millions of consumers end up swallowing this damaging view of what Indians, particularly women, look like. Not only do foreigners see this as a representation of Indian women, but Indian women themselves internalize that white standard. So when young girls say they want to be like Katrina Kaif, they want the long locks, beautiful light eyes, slim body, and subconsciously…the white face.

White skin has been pervasive and subliminal in nature with the inflation of light-skinned actresses in film. However, it also manifests itself quite obviously. Exhibit A is a song/music video from the Bollywood movie “Roy” called “Chittiyaan Kalaiyaan” (literal translation: White Wrists). Below are some of the lyrics from the chorus:

Mann jaa ve…mainu shopping kara de Please agree…take me shopping Mann jaa ve… romantic picture dikha de Please agree…show me a romantic movie Requestaan paayiaan ve.. I request you… Chittiyaan kalaiyaan ve White wrists Oh baby meri chittiyan kalaiyan ve Oh baby I have fair-complexioned wrists Chittiyaan kalaiyaan ve White wrists

So do the lyricists believe that white skin is a woman’s ticket to having a man “wrapped around her finger” so he can finance her material gain? By the logic of the lyrics, a man (particularly, an Indian man) would not be interested in spending his money on a woman unless she showed off her “white wrists.” So here we must realize that not only do men aspire to espouse a light-skinned woman, females can also perpetuate colorism by capitalizing on their own light skin privilege.

Of course the lead in the video, Jacqueline Fernandez (tracing her multi-ethnic roots to Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Canada, India, and Bahrain) to be light-skinned for the music video to bring its lyrics to life. However, Fernandez has what seems to be white backup dancers as well.

I would have expected other light-skin Indian women as props in a Bollywood music video, but clearly, actual white people would get the message across more directly. Not only should you have light skin to be desired and warrant the “male gaze,” you should surround yourself with white women to show you are as far away from the “typical” Indian female image as possible (as if Bollywood has not done that already for its industry by casting Katrina Kaif, Kareena Kapoor, and Priyanka Chopra in nearly every film out there.)

What about that confederate flag guitar in the music video’s introduction, though?

Did this slip through every crew member’s hands when filming on set? Arguably, we might not expect Indian filmmakers to be well-versed in every aspect of United States history. However, that a white supremacist symbol landed in a music video celebrating white skin is nothing short of appalling and almost eerily coincidental.

Perhaps we ought to excuse these actresses for participating in discriminatory media. We may argue that years of colonialism bred internalized racism and, therefore, Eurocentric beauty standards. After all, colorism has weasled its way into Southeast Asian society so pervasively, that skin-whitening creams like Fair & Lovely are openly advertised on television and insisted upon customers in drug stores.

However, is demanding diverse representation of Indian women too much to ask? I used to be proud of myself for having lighter skin than some of my colleagues and family members, but now I realize that it was all systemic and a result of consuming tainted, harmful, and inaccurate media. I am no better than an Indian woman darker than me because of difference in skin color. There is no excuse for deliberately silencing their voices and erasing their images. I demand dark-skinned women in my movies. I demand dark-skinned women in my soap operas. I demand dark-skinned women exist outside of a portrayal of the impoverished. I demand dark-skinned visiblity and celebration.

Edit: This post has been corrected to correctly identify the actress as Jacqueline Fernandez.

i hate this trashy song so much and it never ceases to horrify me that no one protested against its message and it played literally everywhere

john green novels: The thing about a spiral, is that if you follow it inward, it never actually ends. It just keeps tightening infinitely.

john green videos: You don’t want peanut butter on your celery? What are you, a communist?

some of y'all: science has more evidencial support than religion, and it is the more reliable and believable truth. in the ancient contest between empiricial science and religion, modern achievements have declared science as more accurate and the better source of truth.

the truth: Scientific empiricism and religion aim to understand different kinds of truths, and they have never truly been at odds. Science gives the mechanical explanation of the world. Religion gives a philosophical explanation. Both are inexorably intertwined, but each have their own realm of study. In the last 3000 years, men of science have typically also been men of religion. Much of modern science today relies upon the accomplishments and theories of men who were religious. Further, if you devote serious time to the study of either the sciences OR religions and philosophy, you will discover that there are very few discrepancies and they actually correspond to one another. The real problem comes when science attempts to make a philosophical observation, or when religion attempts to make a mechanical observation. Religion’s role is not to explain how clouds form, how cells function, or how light travels. Science’s role is not to explain the meaning of life, whether or not God exists, and what morality is. All in all, each are good and legitimate areas of study.

that’s how you can be both, kids

“Religion’s role is not to explain how clouds form, how cells functions, or how light travels”. Except that’s literally not true? Religions have always been used to explain the things we had no other explanation for… And control them.

Religion claims to have answers. Not just philosophically, but mechanically. Thunder and lightning? Zeus’s fury, we have displeased him somehow. The cycle of seasons? Persephone. Why is your child sick from cancer? God’s will, but pray hard enough and it will heal. Why your team won or lost? Curses and blessings from spirits, pay a sorcerer to enchant the players next time. A drought? Will of the divine, sacrifice a goat to appease it. Why some people are born poor and others rich? Karma, be a good person in this life and you’ll do better in the next one. The origin of life? God’s will. Why there are stars in the sky? God’s will. Why humans don’t look like other animals (ignore the primates)? Made in the image of God. Stop searching, theoretical physicists! Stop theorizing and observing, evolutionary biologists! Stop modelizing, meteorologists! We have the answer, and it was God all along.

As for “religion and science actually correspond to one another”? Galileo, Giordano Bruno and the women who were burned as witches – and still are in some countries – would like to have a word with you. Also, evolution VS young-earth creationism.

In 2013, 14% of all Americans believed that AIDS is divine punishment for homosexuality. The number goes up to 24% of White Evangelical Christians. Saying that a disease is a divine punishment is explaining it: either God was a part of the appearance of the virus and it’s not a philosophical question, or He wasn’t and it’s not a scientific question.

Sexual child mutilation for religious reasons is more than a philosophical issue. The Church of Scientology scamming people out of their life savings and severing them from their family and friends is more than a philosophical issue. The Magdalene laundries in Ireland are more than a philosophical issue. Televised exorcisms are more than a philosophical issue.

Science = mechanics and religion = philosophy would be nice, but it’s not… you know… true. It may be your opinion and the world would probably be a better place if everybody believed it, but it’s not how organized religion has ever worked in human societies.
