A message from Hino
With the help of a friend of mine that studies japanese, i understand something very important about the last extra chapter of vk. He points out that Zero uses a particular word that is “koi - 恋” to express his feelings of love towards Yuki.
As we know, Yuki and Kaname’s child name is“Ai”( 愛), that means “love” too. I think that Ai, after hearing the words said by her father, wants to know the difference between the meaning of her name and the word used by her father to express love to her mother.
Which is the difference between the two words?
First of all, we have to notice that Hino herself confronts the two words, “Ai” and “Koi”, through the question that Ai poses to Aido. Ai asks to Aido what came first in his relationship with Yori. It was love (こい = “koi” in hiragana) or affection (あい= “Ai” in hiragana) (According to the translation)?
I think that one of the goals of this chapter, is just to explore the different form of love.
As I said, Both “ai （愛）” and “koi （恋）” can be translated as “love” in English. However, they have a different nuance in Japanese.
“Koi” (the word used by Zero) is a love for the opposite sex, or a feeling of longing for a specific person. It can be described as “romantic love” or “passionate love”, so “Koi” usually describes love between a couple only. “Ai”(the name of the child) instead, is a broader concept. It includes brotherly love, motherly love, and love between a couple, so basically it has a definition of a general feeling of love.
It’s clear that Hino, through the Ai’s question, wants to confront the romantic love (Koi) VS not-romantic love (Ai. Even though it has both meanings). In fact (according to the translation), Ai talks about love (Koi) and affection (Ai). And I also think that Hino has implicity given a specific meaning to the name of the child, giving in this way a specific connotation to Yuuki’s feelings for Kaname, that are not in a romantic way.
What about Yuki and Zero? Zero confesses his feelings using a word that describes romantic love, and about Yuki’s feelings, I simply think that Hino has avoided to face this argument (in this chapter.), because it’s clearly impossibile that she feels a mother love (or a not romantic love) for Zero XD I mean….we have a lot of proofs that show us what kind of feelings Yuki feels for Zero, but i don’t want to focus on this point because other zeki shipper already did.
What might be the name of Zero&Yuki’s son?
