stranger things convinced most of its viewer base that mike wheeler and 2/3 byers are narratively useless in season 4 when the truth is that they're too good to let stay in hawkins and still have the protagonists lose. did everyone forget about season 1. they were doing EVERYTHING. also the gay roadtrip subplot is the opposite of narratively useless. it's a secret tool that will help us later
Eddie, at the hospital post Upside Down, is out of it because of meds and keeps blabbering nonsense. Dustin visits him with Steve and Eddie keeps referring to him as his son.
Dustin replies jokingly with "Yeah and this is your husband, Steve" and rolls his eyes.
And if Eddie has some memory of parenting Dustin, he doesn't recall ever being in a relationship with Steve, which makes him come to the conclusion that he must've lost his memory.
Dustin feels immensely guilty as Eddie keeps apologizing to Steve in tears, for forgetting such a "wonderful and beautiful husband".
It goes on for a few days and surprisingly, Steve gets quickly adjusted to being Eddie's husband.
When Eddie is finally better and doesn't need that many painkillers, he still remembers how he acted around Dustin and Steve.
He's too embarrassed to face them again so he asks his uncle to keep them away if they ever come to visit again. And they do.
Steve barges into the hospital room "What the hell is going on?"
Eddie can't blabber anything coherent so Steve presses "Do you want to divorce me? is that it?"
To which, for some unknown reason, Eddie takes offense to "What the fuck, Harrington?"
"Oh, I'm 'Harrington' now? great" he replies, clearly pissed "No, fantastic! You'll have a word with my lawyer."
"Lawyer??"
"I'm taking Dustin and you'll have to pay for child support!"
"You can't take Dustin! He's my kid too!"
Wayne and Dustin observe their whole discussion from the entrance door, too scared to come into the room.
"Does Steve really have a lawyer?" Wayne muses.
Dustin turns to him, scandalized "They aren't married! I'm not their child!"
Will and Mike being together for years before the party finds out. The party being so used to Mike and Will being Will-and-Mike they don't even question them moving in together after sharing a dorm for years in college. Mike and Will being each other's date to the Lumax wedding without anyone ever seeing anything wrong with that picture. Mike and Will being so naturally tied to each other's side they don't ever feel like there's anything out of place when they show up arm-in-arm. People asking Lucas and Dustin about it and them just kind of short-circuiting because no that's just Will-and-Mike don't worry about it it's normal and everyone else questioning their sanity
Me looking at the grumpy, “I hate everyone in the world except for you” character, the “asshole turned lovable himbo” character, the “hot dad who genuinely loves and cares for his kid” character, and the villain/character with VERY questionable morals:
I feel like (in my opinion) a lot of people misinterpret why Lucas was sad after seeing his friends celebrate winning the DnD campaign.
I don't think he was sad because his friends ditched his game to play DnD, because he already knew they weren't at the game. He saw that there was an empty spot for them.
And, yes, that could've him being hurt by it, but the way he reacts was more a sense of realisation.
I think this is the moment he realises that he isn't happy being popular. That night he finally got what he wanted. He wanted to have his moment, to be part of the team, to feel like a winner. He finally reached "popularity" and yet he isn't happy. Or – he isn't as happy as he would've been winning the campaign with his friends.
Like we see him try to put on a smile when Patrick comes to get him for the party, but it doesn't stick. He isn't happy. This isn't what he wants.
And this is literally confirmed in his monologue to Jason. It's the moment Lucas accepts that he's okay with being a "freak." He's okay with who he is and he doesn't have to change.
This show is an anthem for being different. For accepting who you are. And that's what Lucas's story is.
