BS Wildlife Biology Dec 2020. They/them y elle/elles. I post bad wildlife memes, that's about it. Header by @Cainternn! I'm working on my teaching credential to teach biology. I research gaming addiction in adolescents and stream sometimes on Twitch.

Who is a scientist you wish you learned about in school?

I'm coming up with a list of people to include and reference in my lessons as a science teacher!

In particular I am interested in diversifying the people I talk about especially marginalized genders and people of color in STEM!

Here is the spreadsheet of all the suggestions! I am still working on updating and adding more info. It will take me a while to do an in depth research dive on each person!

After several weeks of painstaking work, my weevil costume is done!!! I made it for a parade where our uni’s entomology club participated in, which was a lot of fun! The colors are based on Eupholus magnificus.

The build is made put of cardboard and masking tape. I covered the top stripe, eyes, and underside of the head with mesh, so visibility and breathability is pretty fantastic. The antennae are adjustable too! The head is attached to the thorax with a velcro strip.

The extra arms are attached with fishing line and velcro to the top gloves. Definitely a challenge to figure out, one of the arms unfortunately snapped off during parading :(

Overall, I’m incredibly pleased with how the costume turned out, it’s been a while since having a cool project to work on!

For anyone who needs a reminder on how absurdly powerful gun lobbyists are in the politics of the United States, you should know that the only reason that Florida’s state bird is not the Florida Scrub Jay (the only endemic bird species in the state), is because a single dumb fucking NRA lobbyist hates them and thinks they’re “frumpy”

Like are you fucking kidding me with this

It's beautiful wtf

I believe that photo is actually a California scrub jay but the Florida scrub jay is indeed beautiful

One of the nicest looking birds in the country if you ask me

About octopi if you were to bring regular meals to the female somehow, will she accept them and survive? How do they do in the aquariums, do they just let them die ?

it doesn't matter if you try to feed them, they still won't eat! dying after breeding is part of the natural octopus lifecycle, the same as it is for salmon.

it seems brutal to you, long-lived giant primate that you are, but death is just as important to these animal's lifecycle as birth is! the older generation goes out with a bang all at once, freeing up ecological resources for the next generation in an endless cycle of boom and bust.

and who's to say that if the octopus and the salmon would even WANT to change this, if they could? the endless drive to survive by any means necessary is a deep and desperate need baked into your mammal bones by design, sure, but many other creatures are born with a set expiration date.

it's not bad or sad, really, it's just different, and it deserves to be respected.
