The Royal Australian Navy's first female sailor was not a pilot, a riveter, a nurse, or even an actual crewperson on a ship. Instead, she was a 6-year-old girl brought onboard as a mascot, a rank typically held by an animal. But it was for good reason: It was the only way to legally save her life.
