Qualcomm announces Snapdragon 855 for 5G smartphones - ooVoo
Famous chip supplier Qualcomm revealed a new generation of mobile phone processor chips on Tuesday that are going to be used in the 5G phones in the United States starting from the next year. The major feature of the Snapdragon 855 chip, revealed at an event in Hawaii, is a so-called modem for phones which is going to connect the 5G wireless data networks with mobile data speeds of up to 50 or 100 times faster than current 4G networks. This announcement made by Qualcomm isn’t a surprising one as they released the previous processor, the Snapdragon 845, at the same conference almost exactly one year ago. But the new 855 chip isn’t just a normal processor. It is a chip that will be found in the first wave of 5G phones. Qualcomm has said this new platform will support “multi-gigabit” download speeds on 5G networks. Mobile carriers are spending a lot of money on 5G networks and are eager to sell 5G phones and data plans to recoup investment costs. Qualcomm, the largest supplier of mobile phone chips, said Snapdragon 855 is going to be used Samsung 5G smartphones that Verizon Communications Inc and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd said on Monday would be rolled out in the United States in the first half of 2019. The Samsung phone is going to be a serious threat for Apple Inc because according to reports, Apple would wait until at least 2020 to release its first 5G iPhones which is really going to affect the sales of Apple iPhones.
