So Long Solo: SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY So Low In Box Office Debut - Movies In Focus
It looks like this Star Wars Story won’t have a happy ending. Ron Howard’s Solo: A Star Wars Story has seriously underperformed on it’s opening, scoring $83 million at the US box office and just $65 million in foreign territories. Disney/Lucasfilm was hoping that the film might bank $130-$150 million over the Memorial Day weekend in the US alone – but it’ll now be lucky to hit $100 million. Not good for a pic with reported $300 million budget. Everyone is trying to figure out what went wrong – was it Alden Ehrenreich’s casting? What about the very public firing of the film’s original directors? Maybe it was released too soon after Star Wars: The Last Jedi? Speaking of The Last Jedi, did that film’s muted fan reaction have a knock-on effect? Who knows – maybe it was all of the above. However, it’s telling that as a life-long Star Wars fan, I haven’t seen this movie yet. I’m waiting until later this week. I think there will be a serious rethink on how Disney/Lucasfilm move forward with Star Wars, after all, the don’t want to kill the goose that laid the golden egg.
