The Bible Says it, I Believe it, That Settles it? -
“The Bible says it, I believe it, that settles it.” But what does the Bible say? And how do I know that what I think it says is correct? Because however I interpret what the Bible says there is someone else who interprets it to say something different. And they too make the same statement: “The Bible says it, I believe it, that settles it.” And since truth is exclusive by definition, we can’t both be right. Maybe their interpretation is right and mine wrong! And we could both be wrong! How would I know? How could I know? First of all there is a prerequisite. I must be willing to follow the evidence where it leads. That takes humility. That involves admitting I don’t know everything and can’t know everything. I’m not perfect or infallible. The Word of God is inerrant. I’m not. That means whatever I do know is a result of humility. I derive confidence from humility. Because learning ceases without it. Therefore confidence without humility is bigotry. That’s when I stop learning and become a small-minded, bible-thumping caricature. You see, it doesn’t follow that because the Bible is the final Word of God, that any of us has a final and definitive intellectual understanding of that Word. We are always learning more, and will always have more to learn. Because God is omniscient, eternal and infinite -and we are not. The honor, joy and wonder of learning about God, His Word and His Creation will go on forever! I’m not saying we can’t know the truth, or that we don’t already have a firm foundational understanding of God’s Word. There are undeniable self-evident truths that transcend intellectual arguments over interpretations of the biblical text as “literal”, “metaphorical”, “allegorical”, “observational”, “descriptive” or “prescriptive”. A child can understand God’s message! And that’s the point. So the next time I have it all figured out I’ll remember to take another look in the mirror. And know with the confident humility of a child that I’m not God. At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.” -Matthew 11:25 Like This Blog?
