KABIRU GAYA The senator representing Kano South Senatorial District, Kabiru Gaya, has formally declared his intention to contest the office of deputy president in the ninth Senate, which is scheduled for inauguration in June. Mr Gaya, a four-time senator and member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), made his declaration on Thursday. He said he is contesting because he is the most ranking senator from the North-west geopolitical zone, Punch newspapers reports. The lawmaker is currenttly the chairman of the Senate committee on works. He was a governor of Kano State during the General Ibrahim Babangida’s aborted transition programmes in the early 1990s, and served as minority whip in the sixth Senate. His declarations comes amidst speculations that the APC is contemplating zoning the position to the South-east. Mr Gaya, who debunked the speculations, told journalists that based on information available to him, the APC leadership is considering zoning the Speaker, House of Representatives to the South West, Deputy Speaker to North Central, while it had already zoned the position of the Senate president to the North-east.
