Has organ transplant science gone hog wild?
The need for organ transplants continues to grow across the globe, yet viable human donations currently cannot fulfil the demand. According to UNOS every 10 minutes, another person is added the organ transplant waiting list in the US, and in 2017 a transplant was averaged every 15 minutes. So what our options? Perhaps organ transplant research can turn to the farm, and look at porcine (pig) organs for transplantation. Move over agriculture, medical research is blurring the line between ag and medicine, making consumers, policymakers, firms, and those in need of organ donations question whether this is something to get on board with or not.
