Revel Brewing Co Partners with BeefBank
According to FoodBank Australia, “Food insecurity is a situation that exists when people lack secure access to sufficient amounts of safe and nutritious food for normal growth and development, and an active, healthy lifestyle.” But did you know over 400,000 people in Queensland alone live with food insecurity, and over half of them are children? That means 1 in 10 Queenslanders regularly go hungry. Not many people realise that food insecurity is a big problem across Australia and it’s a largely hidden crisis. FoodBank was set up 20 years ago and is essentially a huge pantry – collecting all the surplus and excess food from farmers, manufacturers and supermarkets across Australia. The food and groceries are redirected from landfills, via FoodBank warehouses such as the local one in Morningside, and then onto a network of charities who in turn pass it through their kitchens and serve meals to those in need. However, it was noted that there was a huge lack of protein at FoodBank and that’s how BeefBank was created BeefBank is a Brisbane based charity that provides fresh meat to FoodBank Queensland. BeefBank cattle are raised out west specifically for FoodBank Queensland, and the beef from these cattle goes towards creating over 20 million meals each year across Queensland. But what does that have to do with beer? Well, although we have yet to open our doors and turn on our taps, Revel Brewing Co. has partnered with BeefBank with the aim to help our community in a useful way. From our very first brew, we will be sending the spent grains from our microbrewery to BeefBank where they will go to feed the cattle that will in turn go to feed people who cannot afford to feed themselves or their families. It’s a small gesture, but by recycling the Revel Brewing Co. grains and feeding the cattle at BeefBank, we believe we are playing a small part in helping feed our community and those most in need. And that makes us feel good. So when our doors open in a few weeks and you raise a glass to your mates, you can also take a little bit of pride in knowing that you too have given a little bit back to your community. Cheers to that.
