Emily Dickinson, whose poems were sometimes riddles and sometimes what appear to be their opposites – definitions - knew this when she said, “Hope is the thing with feathers that perches in the soul.” To turn that definition into a riddle, all you do is reverse it – “What has feathers and perches in the soul?” One answer could be Hope. That’s the kind of riddle I’m interested in.
