Remembering the Queen of Soul - JCP Eats
Hey, y’all! I’m coming to you with a non-food post. Today – August 16th, 2018 – is a sad day for me. The Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, passed away. Not only was she the first woman to gain a spot in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, she was, is, and will forever be the soundtrack to my life. When I was in kindergarten, we were asked about our favorites — favorite foods, activities, etc. I said that my favorite thing was Aretha Franklin; while I meant to say that my favorite activity was listening to Aretha’s music, my point was clear: she had a very large impact on me from a very young age. My father died when I was 15; when that happened, Aretha’s music was one of the few things that truly comforted me. Through every step of my educational journey, Aretha has been there; I open a textbook and immediately shuffle songs by the Queen. On every flight, in every city, in every country — she’s in my ear. I’m saying all of this to say that she has resonated with me very deeply; for that, I thank her. To celebrate her legacy, here …
