Drew Hoffman - Photography Competition
I am an experimental photographer, focusing primarily on abstract portraiture. I often use fabrics, colored lighting, and reflective surfaces like windows or even fun house mirrors to distort my models. This recent shoot was a significant departure for me, and very much a collaborative effort. A great and good friend had just watched an Amy Winehouse documentary, and found a few parallels to her own life. We discussed our mutual fondness of the music, and how we were affected by Winehouse's story. We decided to try to channel a little of that energy – – the loneliness and desperation – – into a very simple photo shoot. Our intention was to convey real emotion, in a stark setting, without props or an implied storyline.
