Paths to Pier 42 spring celebration, 2015. Several local groups kicked off the spring/summer season at Pier 42 during a community celebration this past Saturday. The formerly derelict area above Montgomery Street is slated to become a large recreational area. Next spring, the Parks Department is scheduled to begin construction on an interim public space, the first phase of a $94 million revitalization project. The groups that make up Paths to Pier 42 have spent the past few summers "reactivating" the pier with programming designed to engage the local community. On Saturday, there were dance performances, demonstration projects and exhibitions from several artists who will be part of this season's programming. You can read more about the artists and upcoming events here. Paths to Pier 42 members include Hester Street Collaborative, GOLES, Two Bridges Neighborhood Council, Lower East Side Ecology Center, the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, the city's Park's Department and State Sen.
