Blu-ray Review: SUPERGIRL – The Complete First Season - Movies In Focus
While DC Comics heroes are very serious on the big screen, they’re much lighter and comic-booky on television. Supergirl embraces its comic book roots and keeps things light and breezy – and it’s all the better for it. Melissa Benoist is Kara Zor-El aka Kara Danvers aka Supergirl, older cousin to Kal-El (aka Clark Kent aka Superman) and she’s sent to protect him just before the destruction of Krypton. However, she’s blasted onto the Phantom Zone and arrives on Earth 24 years too late to be a protector because by the time she shows-up he’s already Superman. Kara hides her powers and identity and goes to live a normal life, working in National City for media mogul Cat Grant (Calista Flockhart aka Mrs Harrison Ford)). However, she decides to use her powers for good, slapping a big red ‘S’ on her chest (actually the crest of the House of El) and joining her cousin to fight for truth, justice and the American way (other ways and nationalities now accepted). Things get off to a rocky start – saving the planet isn’t easy – but soon she’s working for the Department of Extra-Normal Operations (aka DEO), fighting all sorts of super villains.
