Bamboo Bike Build – Part 2 – Wrapping it Up
Once each piece of bamboo has been cut and mitered to perfection, it's time to start heat treating the bamboo culms. Bamboo is a grass made up of sugars and starches. By heating the culm, these sugars/starches are caramelized into a stronger form, this helps to add additional strength, it also helps remove moisture and the waxy outer layer from the poles, while darkening the poles aesthetically. Through a little trial and error I found out that if you don't punch a hole through the solid sections inside the bamboo culm, the bamboo will actually explode when you heat it up. Though this can be very exciting... in the interest of not having pressurized bamboo shards ripping your eyeballs apart, I'd suggest removing these first.
