Congress averts shutdown by passing short-term bill to fund government until Jan. 19
WASHINGTON -- The Senate gave final congressional approval to a short-term spending measure Thursday night to keep the government open through January 19, avoiding a government shutdown ahead of a Friday deadline. Along with funding the government for nearly a month, the bill extends funding for the Children's Health Insurance Program through March and includes a three-week extension of a government surveillance program.
