Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, January 1st to Sunday, January 7th. Game-A-Thon 2018 What: Gaming, Family When: Monday, January 1st at 10:00 a.m. Where: Buffalo Community Center The Wright County Geeks, a geeky Minnesota organization that focuses on RPGs and science fiction, offers its sixth annual family-friendly gaming day. Play board games, tabletop role-playing games, miniatures games, card games, computer games, and more at the Buffalo Community Center. The weather might be cold, but a room full of friendly geeks with games and door prizes could warm anyone up. This event is free. Stargazing Seminar What: Science & Tech, Family, Educational When: Tuesday. January 2nd at 6:00 p.m. Where: Midwest Mountaineering Charlie McElveen from the Minnesota Astronomical Society presents a seminar that will illuminate the night sky (figuratively speaking) and help attendees grasp their place in the universe. Learn about the movement of the earth around the sun, the moon's orbit, and the effects these things have on our daily lives. This will be followed by a larger-scale look at the known universe and the Earth's place in all of it. Books & Bars: Before the Fall What: Books, Food & Drink When: Tuesday, January 2nd at 6:15 p.m. Where: Amsterdam Bar and Hall Books and Bars is an “open public book club show” hosted and moderated by Minnesota Public Radio senior producer Jeff Kamin that provides attendees with “a unique atmosphere for a lively discussion of interesting authors, fun people, good food, and social lubrication.” The book being read and discussed this month is Before the Fall by Noah Hawley. YogaQuest Continues: The Jennifer Morgue What: Sports & Fitness When: Tuesday, January 2nd at 7:00 p.m. Where: YQdio Come and experience YogaQuest, a blend of yoga and fanfiction storytelling led by certified yoga instructors. Experience a yoga workout experience and a story at the same time. This week’s theme is The Jennifer Morgue, a tale of espionage and possible Lovecraftian horror. This event costs $15. Tea and Meeples: Board Games: New Beginnings What: Food & Drink, Meetup, Gaming When: Tuesday, January 2nd at 7:00 p.m. Where: 7512 Pillsbury Ave. South, Richfield Enjoy a night of community and tea with Tea and Meeples, a weekly gathering of friendly geeks at “Panda Castle” in Richfield. Enjoy a night of gaming to greet 2018 and all the new beginnings it could bring. MTG Night: Chaos Draft What: Gaming When: Wednesday, January 3rd at 6:00 p.m. Where: Clockwerks Brewing Ring in the new year with a night of Magic: The Gathering and the Chaos Draft. Participants will receive three random boosters from the history of the game, then build a 40-card deck to compete in three matches. Winners could earn Magic cards or extra goodies from Clockwerks. There is a $15 entry fee for this event. Tape Freaks January What: Movies When: Wednesday, January 3rd at 7:00 p.m. Where: The Trylon Cinema Come to Tape Freaks' monthly mystery movie showing at the Trylon. This month's theme is Haunted Houses, so get ready for some spooky cinema. Tape Freaks is a local film society focused on the VHS era. Tickets are $5. Crafty Geek/Make it Sew What: Arts, Meetup When: Thursday, January 4th at 6:30 p.m. Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!” One-Shot Comics: Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur What: Comics When: Thursday, January 4th at 7:00 p.m. Where: Moon Palace Books One-Shot Comics, a monthly comic series devoted to covering a diverse range of comics and graphic novels, returns with a discussion of Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur by Amy Reeder and Brandon Montclare, with illustrations by Natacha Bustos and Marco Faila. This is a tale of a preteen supergenius teaming up with a prehistoric tyrant. One-Shot Comics strives toward the goals of “creating an inclusive space” and “perpetual awesomeness.” First Thursday Films: Bronx Gothic What: Educational, Movies When: Thursday, January 4th at 7:00 p.m. Where: Capri Theater First Thursday Films at the Capri Theater, a screening and speaking series, will be showing Bronx Gothic as part of Black Cinema: Under the Skin, a program of films by black filmmakers exploring black culture and experience. Bronx Gothic is a portrait of writer and performer Okwui Okpokwasili as she stages a final tour for her one-woman show of the same name. Expect a deep dive into the creative process and the complex social issues and trauma presented in Okwui Okpokwasili's work. Tickets are $5. Geek Slink Belly Dance What: Sports & Fitness When: Thursday, January 4th at 7:00 p.m. Where: YQdio Geek Slink is a bellydance class intended to be a welcoming and safe space to focus on fun, fusion, and fitness. Classes are open to any level of experience, body type, and gender. Classes are $15 for walk-ins, or $60 for a five-class punch card. Free trial classes are available. Weekly Comics Chat What: Meetup, Comics When: Thursday, January 4th at 7:00 p.m. Where: Kitty Cat Klub The Girls-Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join. Friday Night Magic What: Gaming, Meetup When: Friday, January 5th at 6:00 p.m. Where: Mischief Toy Store Mischief Toy Store in St. Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them this Friday night. Entry is $5; all players will receive prizes. This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome. United Geeks of Gaming BattleTech Tabletop What: Gaming, Meetup When: Friday, January 5th at 7:00 p.m. Where: Fallout Shelter Arcade Come on down for an evening of tactical mech combat. The United Geeks of Gaming meet Friday nights for a beginner-friendly session of the tabletop mech game BattleTech at Fallout Shelter Arcade in Northeast. FSA’s Virtual World gaming pods also run the immersive video-game version of BattleTech. Johnny T&T, Orange.Alien, Symone Smash It, and Natanyael What: Music, Nightlife When: Friday, January 5th at 9:30 p.m. Where: Can Can Wonderland A night for music and dancing at Can Can Wonderland! Enjoy geek-friendly musical performances from Johnny T&T (chill hip-hop vibes), Orange.Alien (techno space rap/pop), Symone Smash It (robo-trance pop), and Natanyael (jazzy dance pop). This event is 21-plus and has a $2 cover. United Geeks of Gaming Open Gaming at Fantasy Flight Games What: Gaming, Meetup When: Saturday, January 6th at 10:00 a.m. Where: Fantasy Flight Games Center A second United Geeks of Gaming event this week is its monthly open gaming session, held on the first Saturday of every month, to which gamers of all ages and abilities are invited to “spend the day hanging out with fellow geeks playing, learning, and teaching games.” Attendees are encouraged to bring their favorite board games, card games, and/or role-playing games, but the group has amassed an impressive library of its own games as well. Brickmania Toyworks: A LEGO Fan Expo What: Family, Arts When: Saturday, January 6th starting at 10:00 a.m. and Sunday, January 7th starting at 12:00 p.m. Where: Brickmania Toyworks It's the last weekend to see Brickmania Toyworks' LEGO expo at their warehouse in Northeast Minneapolis. See some of the best and most exciting LEGO works on display, including works from Brickmania themselves and the Greater Midwest LEGO Train Club, Twin Cities LEGO Train Club, TwinLUG, Jesse’s Brick Galaxy, and a Guinness World Record–holding Largest K’Nex Ball from Austin Granger. Don’t miss out on your chance to see Northeast’s own Nye’s done up in LEGO! Tickets are $8 and are timed entry. Philadelphia World's Fair, 1876 What: Educational When: Saturday, January 6th at 12:00, 12:30, and 1:00 p.m. Where: Alexander Ramsey House, St. Paul The year 1876 was a time of change, and this event is a great opportunity to learn about what that change meant on a family and world scale. This event focuses on the 1876 World's Fair, inventions that made life easier, and the experience of the Ramsey family in 1876. Experience the food that was popular during the era and collect "time capsule tokens" during your journey. This event is $10 for adults, with a variety of discounts available. Candlelight Snowshoe and Hike What: Sports & Fitness, Family, Educational When: Saturday, January 6th at 5:00 p.m. Where: Charles Lindbergh House and Museum This annual hike along the trail between the Charles A. Lindbergh Historic Site and the Charles A. Weyerhaeuser Memorial Museum is an opportunity to experience nature by candlelight. The Minnesota Historical Society notes, "Guests can drop in at any time during the event and hike whatever distance is comfortable." Both museums will be open and free "for guests to warm up and grab a refreshment." Note that this event was rescheduled from December 31 due to the cold weather; if there are subzero temperatures or other inclement weather, it may be rescheduled again. Monty Python and the Holy Grail: A Drinking Game What: Theatre & Comedy When: Saturday, January 6th at 10:30 p.m. Where: Phoenix Theater The Minnesota arm of A Drinking Game welcomes 2018 with a "live staged reading of this hilarious classic, with costumes, props, music, fight and dance choreography, a touch of audience participation." Tickets are $9 online or $15 at the door. RPG Sunday Game Day What: Gaming, Meetup When: Sunday, January 7th at 12:00 p.m. Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Center The United Geeks of Gaming group invite you to RPG Sunday Game Day! Whether you are an experienced game master wanting to run a game or someone entirely new to the world of role-playing games who wants to join a game and learn as you go, this is the Sunday game day for you. Shieldmaiden Sunday What: Gaming, Meetup When: Sunday, January 7th at 12:00 p.m. Where: The Source Comics and Games Shieldmaiden Sundays are a dedicated space for female nerds and geeks at Source Comics and Games. This is a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks. So, which of these events will you be attending?
