Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, May 8th through Sunday May 14th. Books & Bars: Locally Laid What: Books, Meetup When: Tuesday, May 9th at 6:15 p.m. Where: Indeed Tap Room Books and Bars is an “open public book club show” hosted and moderated by Minnesota Public Radio senior producer Jeff Kamin that provides attendees with “a unique atmosphere for a lively discussion of interesting authors, fun people, good food, and social lubrication.” The book being read and discussed this month is Locally Laid by Lucie Amundsen. YogaQuest Continues: Twin Peaks What: Sports & Fitness When: Tuesday, May 9th at 7:00 p.m. Where: YQdio Come and experience YogaQuest, a blend of yoga and fanfiction storytelling led by certified yoga instructors. Experience a yoga workout experience and a story at the same time. Get flexible enough for fire walking or dream-man dancing with this week's theme: Twin Peaks. Mayte Garcia for The Most Beautiful: My Life with Prince What: Books When: Tuesday, May 9th at 7:00 p.m. Where: University Club of St. Paul Mayte Garcia will be at the University Club for a reading of her new book The Most Beautiful: My Life with Prince, focusing on her life experiences and times with Prince.. There will be a discussion with the author and and introduction by local author Jim Walsh. Tickets to this event, which is organized by downtown bookstore SubText Books, are $30 and include a copy of the book. Gaymer Space What: Gaming, Meetup, Community When: Tuesday, May 9th at 5:00 p.m. Where: GlitchHQ GlitchHQ will be hosting Gaymer Space, a monthly event giving the LGBTQ+ community a place to gather, game and geek out over shared interests like video games, board games, and the industry. This free event lasts from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. and will provide a casual space to hang out that should be fun for all ages. Bar Trivia What: Trivia, Meetup When: Tuesday, May 9th at 6:45 p.m. Where: New Bohemia Uptown United Geeks of Gaming will be assembling for Sporcle-based trivia at New Bohemia in Uptown on Tuesday Nights. Sporcle is a team-based trivia night and has a focus on general trivia, so whatever you geek out about, you may be able to help your team. United Geeks of Gaming has a regular team, and attendees could also form splinter teams or go solo. The trivia itself is free; the food and drinks are not. TC Trek Trivia What: Trivia When: Wednesday, May 10th at 7:00 p.m. Where: Driftwood Char Bar Hosted by “Master Trekkie,” TC Trek Trivia consists of five rounds: General Trek (questions covering all things Star Trek); Identify the Image; Ships, Technology, and Cultures; Complete the Quote; and a “Wild Card” round. Questions for each of these five rounds are drawn from all seven Star Trek television series and all twelve films. According to Master Trekkie himself, TC Trek Trivia is “all ages, no cover, food, drinks, and a whole lot of Trek!” MN Publishing Tweet Up What: Books, Meetup When: Wednesday, May 10th at 5:00 p.m. Where: LynLake Brewery Meet up with book geeks and publishing insiders at LynLake Brewing in Minneapolis. This is a free event, and a great opportunity to meet other Twin Cities bibliophiles and network. This regular event is a collaboration between MN Publishing Tweet Up, the Minnesota Book Publishers Roundtable, and the Authors Guild. Trash Film Debauchery: She's Too Young What: Movies, Screening When: Wednesday, May 17th at 7:00 p.m. Where: Trylon Microcinema Trash Film Debauchery presents a screening of made-for-TV Lifetime original She's Too Young, an over-the-top exploration of the most dangerous thing in the world: teenage partying. The screening is $5, and getting tickets ahead of time is recommended, as these events often fill up. TC 30+ Queer Book Club: Secret Loves of Geek Girls What: Books, Meetup When: Wednesday, May 10th at 7:00 p.m. Where: Moon Palace Books TC 30+ Queer Book Club is holding its second installment at Moon Palace Books in Minneapolis, to discuss The Secret Loves of Geek Girls edited by Hope Nicholson. Come on down for a space for 30-something queer folks to connect over books and wine in a rad bookstore. Crafty Geek/Make it Sew What: Crafting, Meetup When: Thursday, May 11th at 6:30 p.m. Where: Event Horizon The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!” Books and Beer Pop-Up Bookstore What: Books, Nightlife When: Thursday, May 11th at 5:00 p.m. Where: Lake Monster Brewing Get ready to read local and drink local with Lake Monster Brewing's Books and Beer Pop-Up Bookstore. Get ready for a fun night full of local authors and delightful brews from Lake Monster. Moon Palace Books is the participating bookstore for this event, and there will be more than 20 local authors in attendance. This is a free event, but note that not every author present will be able to take credit cards, and the venue does not have an ATM, so prepare accordingly. Weekly Comics Chat What: Meetup, Comics When: Thursday, May 11th at 7:00 p.m. Where: Kitty Cat Klub The Girls-Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join. Tappy Hour: Free Group Tap Dance Lessons What: Sports & Fitness, Nightlife When: Friday, May 12th at 6:00 p.m. Where: Can Can Wonderland Tap the week’s troubles away with a happy hour tap-dancing lesson at Can Can Wonderland. Get a little loose, and learn a new skill while having fun. This is a free event, and some tap shoes are provided. CONsole Room 2017 What: Convention When: Friday, May 12th at 12:00 a.m. to Sunday May 14th at 5:00 p.m. Where: Hilton Minneapolis/St. Paul Airport Mall of America CONsole Room is the premiere gathering space for Twin Cities Whovians as the area's only convention devoted to fans of Doctor Who. Come on down for panels, special guests, a TARDIS "escape room," and more. Preregistration has ended, but you can still get in at the door, with weekend passes running at $90 for adults and one-day passes also available. Lounge 2.0 What: Gaming, Meetup When: Friday, May 12th at 6:00 p.m. Where: GlitchHQ Another event this week at GlitchHQ, Lounge 2.0 is a get-together for people who are passionate about games and want to spend their Friday nights in like-minded company. Glitch offers consoles, PC stations, and tabletop and digital games. If you’re passionate about a game, bring it to share with the community. Coppélia Nouveau What: Arts and Theatre When: Friday, May 12th at 7:00 p.m.; Saturday, May 13th at 2:00 and 7:00 p.m.; and Sunday, May 14th at 2:00 p.m. Where: Ames Center Twin Cities Ballet will be performing Coppélia as no one has ever seen it before in Coppélia Nouveau, an original adaptation of the classic performance featuring a "ballet within a ballet." This story is set in 1920s Paris and focuses on the world of ballet. Ramsey After Dark: Advocates and Activists What: Educational, Nightlife When: Friday, May 12th at 7:00 pm and 8:30 p.m. Where: Alexander Ramsey House The 19th century was a time of change. That change inspired many people to join and lead organizations to advocate for improvements to society, and this Ramsey After Dark tour focuses on those bold reformers, discussing the lives of a number of women in the Twin Cities who committed themselves to changing society. Tickets for this event are $10 for adults, with discounts for students, seniors, and Minnesota Historical Society members. Tsuinishi Anime Club What: Meetup, Anime When: Friday, May 12th at 8:30 p.m. Where: Geek Partnership Society Anime Twin Cities has joined forces with the Geek Partnership Society “to bring a little bit of fun to you on the second and fourth Fridays of each month with this cosponsored anime club.” The group will show various anime movies and series. Read The Book/See The Movie What: Screening, Movies, Books When: Friday, May 12th at 7:00 p.m. Where: TBD (see posting for more information) This monthly club looks at films and their literary inspirations. Each meeting begins with a bit of social time, then at 7:30 p.m., the movie screening itself begins. Per the event listing, email club organizers for further information. Friday Night Magic What: Gaming, Meetup When: Friday, May 12th at 6:00 p.m. Where: Mischief Toy Store Mischief Toy Store in St. Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them this Friday night. Entry is $5; all players will receive prizes. This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome. Level Up What: Sports & Fitness When: Saturday, May 13th at 8:30 a.m. Where: YQdio After gaining all of this experience with various yoga poses, you’ve earned the right to level up and dive deeper into familiar poses, and even learn new feats (poses). There is a $15 charge for this advanced class. Penumbra Theatre at 40: Art, Race and a Nation on Stage What: Arts and Theater When: February 18–July 30, 2017 Where: Minnesota History Center This exhibit explores the dynamic 40-year history of Penumbra Theatre in the Twin Cities, ranging from social justice to the black arts movement. Stories are told from the perspective of a variety of creatives and artifacts. You’ll be able to see artifacts from the theater and experience a set from the play Fences. Bluegrass Matinee at Can Can Wonderland What: Music When: Saturday, May 13th at 2:00 p.m. Where: Can Can Wonderland Fill your Saturday afternoon with a free bluegrass matinee with the Broken Heartland String Band at Can Can Wonderland. Superhero Outdoor Obstacle Course What: Sports & Fitness When: Saturday, May 13th at 8:30 a.m. Where: Onalaska, WI Help your whole family achieve the superheroic potential that's always been there with this outdoor obstacle course from the La Crosse Area Family YMCA across the border. The event is for all ages, and superhero gear is recommended. Swing Dance Lesson What: Sports & Fitness, History When: Saturday, May 13th at 11:00 a.m. Where: Commemorative Air Force Minnesota Wing Come join the Commemorative Air Force Minnesota Wing for an afternoon of swing dance lessons and swap meets meant to help people polish their swing-dancing skills ahead of the group's the Spring Swing Big Band Hangar Dance. Dance lessons will begin at noon. Geek Physique Archery What: Sports & Fitness When: Saturday, May 13th at 1:00 p.m. Where: Lauderdale Community Park Come learn archery by shooting at printouts of zombies to improve your physique, your hand-eye coordination, and your preparation for that inevitable zombie apocalypse. Experienced archers are encouraged to bring extra bows to allow novices to give it a try. Discussion with Author Joan Verba What: Books When: Saturday, May 13th at 1:00 p.m. Where: Southeast Public Library In this Rivendell Discussion Group event, author Joan Marie Verba will be present for a discussion of her most recent books: Wondry Dragon Finds a Home and Modern Surprises. This is a free event. Amory Wars Signing with Claudio Sanchez What: Comics When: Saturday, May 13th at 2:00 p.m. Where: Source Comics and Games Claudio Sanchez, lead singer and guitarist of Coheed and Cambria and creator of the comic series The Amory Wars, will be signing items at Source Comics and Games from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. Saturday. The store notes, "You’re welcome to bring comics from home to have signed, but we will have issues #1 and #2 of the newest chapter in the Amory Wars while supplies last. In addition to those two issues, we’ll also have some variant covers and the previous trade paperbacks in the series all available for purchase." American Housewife CD Release Party What: Concerts, Nightlife When: Saturday, May 13th at 8:00 p.m. Where: Can Can Wonderland American Housewife is throwing a free CD release party with special guests Hart Lake Mystery. Note that Can Can Wonderland is 21+ after 9:00 p.m., and the event is likely to last until 11:00 or so. Saturday Morning Cartoons What: Sports & Fitness, Meetup When: Saturday, May 13th at 10:00 a.m. Where: YQdio Another event held at the YogaQuest YQdio this week is Saturday Morning Cartoons, which features “classic (and not-so-classic) Saturday morning cartoons, plus yoga, plus the stupidest cereals in existence!” The yoga practice will consist of “some gentle wake-me-up vinyasa followed by a session of stretchy, restorative yoga, all set to cartoons, and wrapped up with a bowl of delicious technicolor goodness.” St. Paul Restored Mansion Tour What: History When: Saturday, May 14th at 12:00 p.m. Where: 701 Summit Ave. Explore a recently restored 19th century mansion in St. Paul before it goes on the market. Public tours are being offered on Saturday from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and are free, but a $5 donation (which will go to Keys 4/4 Kids) is encouraged. The 7,000-square-foot home was originally designed by Clarence H. Johnston Sr., one of 19th-century Minnesota's leading architects, who also designed iconic structures like the University of Minnesota's Pioneer Hall and Folwell Hall. Shieldmaiden Sundays What: Gaming, Meetup When: Sunday, May 14th at 12:00 p.m. Where: The Source Comics and Games Shieldmaiden Sundays is a new dedicated space for female nerds and geeks at Source. This will be a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks. So, which of these events will you be attending?
