Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, May 29th through Sunday, June 4th. Memorial Day Weekend at Fort Snelling What: Educational When: Monday, May 29th at 10:00 a.m. Where: Fort Snelling Take Memorial Day as an opportunity to connect with Minnesota history through the military lens of Fort Snelling. Hang out with costumed interpreters and learn the many stories behind this historic fort, including those of Dred and Harriet Scott. Enjoy talks, a scavenger hunt, and a “living timeline” featuring costumed interpreters representing the different eras of US military history. Tickets start at $12, with a variety of discounts available. See the website for the day's schedule. Final Hard Monday at the Saloon What: Nightlife, Community When: Monday, May 29th at 10:00 p.m. Where: The Saloon Help say goodbye to a Twin Cities dance mainstay with the final night of Hard Mondays at the Saloon. Celebrate with DJs from this storied dance night's two-decade run, including Panic, the Aether Twins, and Noise. This will be a great night of dark, industrial, and dance music. Knitting Social What: Arts, Meetup When: Tuesday, May 30th at 6:00 p.m. Where: Minnesota History Center Get social with fellow knitters at the Minnesota History Center. This event is an opportunity to hang out, knit, and chat with other folks, so bring a project and be ready to hang out. The group meets in a circle on the third floor of the center. Needles and yarn are available. YogaQuest Continues: Wonder Woman What: Sports & Fitness When: Tuesday, May 30th at 7:00 p.m. Where: YQdio Come and experience YogaQuest, a blend of yoga and fan-fiction storytelling led by certified yoga instructors. Experience a yoga workout experience and a story at the same time. This week's special theme is Wonder Woman, so get ready to celebrate the new film and feel wonderful (and powerful). Tree of Life What: Arts, Educational When: Wednesday, May 31st at 6:30 p.m. Where: ArtStart This class focuses on using a circular wire method to construct your own Tree of Life pendant. Additionally, you will be learning the symbolism behind the Tree of Life, an ancient symbol that arose in many world cultures. The class will be taught by the artist Jeanette Dickinson. Cost for the class is $64 for nonmembers and $52 for ArtStart members, which covers all materials. Star Party What: Educational, Science & Tech When: Thursday, June 1st at 7:00 p.m. Where: Como Planetarium This free event lasts from 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., and includes a mini planetarium program and a variety of activities for all ages. The theme is the upcoming solar eclipse, and many activities will focus on how to safely view it. As always, this Star Party is free. Lake Street Pop-Ups: Mosaic Making What: Arts, Community When: Thursday, June 1st at 5:00 p.m. Where: Super Mercado Morelia This is a great opportunity to get to know your community, make some art, and have some questions answered. Work on mosaic making with the great artists of GoodSpace Murals, and have immigration law and produce questions answered by Hart Law Office and North County Food Alliance. PLAY/TEST What: Gaming When: Thursday, June 1st at 5:00 p.m. Where: GlitchHQ PLAY/TEST is a monthly series hosted by tech nonprofit Glitch that offers the “opportunity to play works-in-progress, debug recent builds, test out new concepts, and connect with community.” At PLAY/TEST, attendees will find “alphas, betas, and even paper prototypes of games made by students and local game developers.” Creators, players, and game lovers of all skill levels are welcome. Crafty Geek/Make it Sew What: Arts, Meetup When: Thursday, June 1st at 6:30 p.m. Where: Event Horizon The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!” Weekly Comics Chat What: Meetup, Comics When: Thursday, June 1st at 7:00 p.m. Where: Kitty Cat Klub The Girls-Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join. National Donut Day at the History Center What: Educational, Food & Drink When: Friday, June 2nd at 7:00 a.m. Where: Minnesota History Center Come to this unique event at the Minnesota History Center for your chance to combine a love of donuts and history. The History Center will open early, at 7:00 a.m. on Friday, June 2nd for tales from humorist Kevin Kling, free donuts, and stories of heroes bringing warm donuts to troops on the front lines in France during World War I. This event is $12 for adults, with discounts for seniors, vets, students, and MNHS members. Chimera Creation: Free Drop-In Art Workshop with Eli Libson What: Arts When: Friday, June 2nd at 11:00 a.m. Where: Can Can Wonderland The seed of creativity can come in many forms, but for many the first step is combination leading to novel forms and ideas. Come to this free drop-in art workshop to get creative juices flowing by working on the creation of a Chimera, a creature of multiple origins, led by a seasoned designer of video-game characters and artisanal minigolf holes and create something new. Tappy Hour: Free Group Tap Dance Lessons What: Sports & Fitness, Nightlife When: Friday, June 2nd at 4:00 p.m. Where: Can Can Wonderland Tap the week’s troubles away with a happy hour tap-dancing lesson at Can Can Wonderland. Get a little loose and learn a new skill while having fun. This is a free event and some tap shoes are provided. Friday Night Magic What: Gaming When: Friday, June 2nd at 6:00 p.m. Where: Mischief Toy Store Mischief Toy Store in St. Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them this Friday night. Entry is $5; all players will receive prizes. This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome. Lounge 2.0 What: Gaming, Meetup When: Friday, June 2nd at 5:00 p.m. Where: GlitchHQ Another event this week at GlitchHQ, Lounge 2.0 is a get-together for people who are passionate about games and want to spend their Friday nights in like-minded company. Glitch offers consoles, PC stations, tabletop, and digital games. If you’re passionate about a game, bring it to share with the community. UGG FSA BattleTech Tabletop What: Gaming When: Friday, June 2nd at 7:00 p.m. Where: Fallout Shelter Arcade Come on down for an evening of tactical mech combat. The United Geeks of Gaming meet Friday nights for a beginner-friendly session of the tabletop mech game BattleTech at Fallout Shelter Arcade in Northeast. FSA’s Virtual World gaming pods also run the immersive video-game version of BattleTech. Courtney Maum for Touch What: Books When: Friday, May 2nd at 7:00 p.m. Where: Subtext Books Hear author Courtney Maum (known for her celebrated novel I Am Having So Much Fun Here without You and other works) read from her new novel, Touch, which focuses on a young woman with an incredible knack for forecasting future trends. Level Up! What: Sports & Fitness When: Saturday, June 3rd at 8:30 a.m. Where: YQdio After gaining all of this experience with various yoga poses, you’ve earned the right to level up and dive deeper into familiar poses, and even learn new feats (poses). There is a $15 charge for this advanced class. Saturday Morning Cartoons What: Sports & Fitness When: Saturday, June 3rd at 10:00 a.m. Where: YQdio Another event held at the YogaQuest YQdio this week is Saturday Morning Cartoons, which features “classic (and not-so-classic) Saturday morning cartoons, plus yoga, plus the stupidest cereals in existence!” The yoga practice will consist of “some gentle wake-me-up vinyasa followed by a session of stretchy, restorative yoga, all set to cartoons, and wrapped up with a bowl of delicious technicolor goodness.” GPS UGG Open Gaming What: Gaming When: Saturday, June 3rd at 10:00 a.m. Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Building The Geek Partnership Society’s United Geeks of Gaming group offers its open gaming session on the first Saturday of every month, to which gamers of all ages and abilities are invited to “spend the day hanging out with fellow geeks playing, learning, and teaching games.” Attendees are encouraged to bring their favorite board games, card games, and/or role-playing games, but the group has amassed an impressive library of its own games as well. Minneapolis–St.Paul Mini Maker Faire What: Educational, Convention, Science & Tech When: Saturday, June 3rd at 10:00 a.m. Where: Minnesota State Fairgrounds Grandstand Come together with makers from around the region for interactive activities, demonstrations, and more. Expect the opportunity to solder, code, screen print, and create in other ways. This is a family-friendly event with plenty for all, including performances and more. See the website for more details. Tickets vary in price, running from $15 for adult presale to $20 same day, with a variety of discounts and bundles available. Penumbra Theatre at 40: Art, Race and a Nation on Stage What: Arts, Theater & Comedy When: February 18–July 30, 2017 Where: Minnesota History Center This exhibit explores the dynamic 40-year history of Penumbra Theatre in the Twin Cities, ranging from social justice to the black arts movement. Stories are told from the perspective of a variety of creatives and artifacts. You’ll be able to see artifacts from the theater and experience a set from the play Fences. Bars, Bootleggers, and Booze Bus Tour What: Educational, Food & Drink When: Saturday, June 3rd at 1:00 p.m. Where: Minnesota History Center Educate yourself while enjoying some of the newest distillers in the Twin Cities area. This tour will take history and booze enthusiasts 21 years or older on a tour with stops at 11 Wells Distillery, the restored Commodore Bar & Restaurant, and Du Nord Cocktail room; samples are included in the ticket price. Tickets are $50, or $40 for members of the Minnesota Historical Society. You'll be learning about Minnesota's complex relationship with liquor. Minne-Mile NightMarket What: Food & Drink, Community When: Saturday, June 3rd at 5:00 p.m. Where: Adams Triangle, 4051 Minnehaha Ave. The Minne-Mile NightMarket is a community festival in the Longfellow neighborhood along the vintage shopping stretch of Minnehaha avenue. Come to this lively community event for family friendly activities, food, drink, and a variety of artists, makers, and vintage vendors. This event will be held outdoors, rain or shine. Senator Al Franken in Conversation with Gary Eichten What: Books When: Saturday, June 3rd at 7:00 p.m. Where: Uptown Church United States Senator for Minnesota, Al Franken, will be at the Uptown Church for a conversation with MPR's Gary Eichten to celebrate the release of Al Franken, Giant of the Senate. The book tells the story of a campaign that saw expectations defied and votes recounted. Tickets for this event are $28 and include a copy of the book. Senator Franken will be signing copies after the event. Movies On The Lake: Back To The Future 2 What: Movies When: Saturday, June 3rd at 9:15 p.m. Where: Como Dockside This free movie screening will be shown at Como Dockside and will be first-come first-serve for seating. The movie will be an old geek favorite, Back To The Future 2, featuring all kinds of space-time-continuum repair hi-jinks. The venue has seating for roughly 300 people, but capacity for around 700, so feel free to bring picnic blankets and chairs. RPG Sunday Game Day What: Gaming When: Sunday, June 4th at 11:00 a.m. Where: Event Horizon at the Waterbury Center The United Geeks of Gaming group invite you to RPG Sunday Game Day! Whether you are an experienced game master wanting to run a game or someone entirely new to the world of role-playing games who wants to join a game and learn as you go, this is the Sunday game day for you. Shieldmaiden Sunday What: Gaming, Meetup When: Sunday, June 4th at 12:00 p.m. Where: The Source Comics and Games Shieldmaiden Sundays is a new dedicated space for female nerds and geeks at Source. This will be a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks. So, which of these events will you be attending?
