Welcome to This Week in Geek, your guide to events of interest to the Minnesota geek community for the week of Monday, May 22nd through Sunday May 28th. Goth Prom XIV: ABYSS What: Nightlife, Community When: Monday, May 22nd at 9:00 p.m. Where: The Saloon Dance the night away for a great cause at the 14th annual Goth Prom, where donations and a portion of the proceeds will go to the Minnesota AIDS Project. Dance to a great lineup of local DJs like Jake Rudh and Fenris playing synthwave while enjoying other delights like fire, cabaret, rope suspension, snake charming, and burlesque performances. This is an 18+ event with a $7 cover. Story Forge What: Gaming, Writing When: Tuesday, May 23rd at 6:00 p.m. Where: GlitchHQ This monthly event by local tech nonprofit Glitch focuses on teaching the art of storytelling in games. This event focuses on the special challenges of writing for interactive fiction and provides a space where game storytellers can meet and work together. Every skill level is welcome. Social Outreach Services Meeting What: Meetup, Community When: Tuesday, May 23rd at 6:30 p.m. Where: Geek Partnership Society Do you want to get involved with planning fun events for Anime Twin Cities? If so, come on down to the Social Outreach Services meeting and work together with fellow geeks to plan fun activities for the summer quarter. Let's Nerd Out! What: Educational, Meetup When: Tuesday, May 23rd at 7:00 p.m. Where: Nomad World Pub Where else but the Nomad World Pub can you learn about mycology and biohacking on a lovely Tuesday in May? That's right, mycology (the study of fungi) will be taught in fun demos in this free event put on by Spark-Y youth action labs, a local nonprofit. YogaQuest Continues: Pirates of the Caribbean What: Sports & Fitness When: Tuesday, May 23rd at 7:00 p.m. Where: YQdio Come and experience YogaQuest, a blend of yoga and fanfiction storytelling led by certified yoga instructors. Experience a yoga workout and a story at the same time. Get ready to climb the mains with this week's theme: Pirates of the Caribbean. Wibbly Wobbly Wednesday What: Meetup, Trivia When: Wednesday, May 24th at 7:00 p.m. Where: Driftwood Char Bar Join your fellow Whovians and trivia fanatics at the Driftwood Char Bar on Wednesday night for Minnesota’s only regular Doctor Who trivia night, brought to you by the creators of TC Trek Trivia. This is an all-ages event with no cover, so expect seats to go quickly. The Mads Are Back! What: Screening, Movies When: Wednesday, May 24th and Thursday May 25th at 7:30 p.m. Where: Riverview Theater Join Mystery Science Theater 3000's Frank Conniff and Trace Beaulieu for a night of movie riffing in the classic MST3K style. There will be two evenings of this event, with two different movies on display. Enjoy a meet and greet before and after the showing. Crafty Geek/Make It Sew What: Crafting, Meetup When: Thursday, May 25th at 6:30 p.m. Where: Event Horizon The Geek Partnership Society’s Crafty Geek club and its sub-club Make It Sew meet Thursday evenings at the Waterbury Center and invite you to “bring your crafty stuff to do” or to “hang out and work with the crafty stuff we have here!” Weekly Comics Chat What: Meetup, Comics When: Thursday, May 25th at 7:00 p.m. Where: Kitty Cat Klub The Girls-Only Comic Club hosts a Weekly Comics Chat on Thursday nights at the Kitty Cat Klub, where there will be “Coffee! Comics! Waffles! Talking!” Additional information about this event is posted on the Girls Only Comic Club’s Facebook group. Individuals interested in attending are encouraged to join. History Happy Hour: Victorian Photography What: Educational, Night Life When: Thursday, May 25th at 5:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Where: Alexander Ramsey House Liberate your mind with libations and learning at the Alexander Ramsey House during History Happy Hour, focused this time on Victorian photography. Learn about the process behind daguerreotypes, tintypes, and postcard photographs from Lacey Prpic Hedtke, photographer and arts organizer. This event is $25 and is for adults over the age of 21. MantiCon What: Conventions When: Friday, May 26th at 2:00 p.m. to Sunday, May 28th at 3:00 p.m. Where: Hilton Airport Mall of America MantiCon is a science-fiction and fantasy literature convention with a mix of panels, distinguished guests, gaming, movies, and more. The convention bills itself as intimate and has plenty of opportunities to socialize, including room parties, and taiko drumming. Registration costs vary but start at $55; see the website for more details. Tappy Hour: Free Group Tap Dance Lessons What: Sports & Fitness, Nightlife When: Friday, May 26th at 4:00 p.m. Where: Can Can Wonderland Tap the week’s troubles away with a happy hour tap-dancing lesson at Can Can Wonderland. Get a little loose and learn a new skill while having fun. This is a free event and some tap shoes are provided. Weird, Wild, and Wonderful: Hand-Painted Movie Posters from Ghana What: Movies, Art When: Friday, May 26th at 7:00 p.m. to Sunday, May 28th at 11:00 p.m. Where: The Parkway Theater Come to the Parkway Theater for a display of movie posters from Ghana's creative world of mobile cinema. Come see unique posters for cult classic ’80s and ’90s cinema, painted on flour sacks to promote movie-going when printing costs were prohibitive in the country. There will be roughly 40 posters on display. A Northshield War Practice What: Sports & Fitness, Educational, Cosplay When: Friday, May 26th at 6:00 p.m. Where: Beltrami County Fairgrounds Come for a weekend of armored combat, historical reenactment, camping, and more at the Kingdom of Northshield War Practice. This event is sponsored by the Society for Creative Anachronism's Kingdom of Northshield. The event is for all ages, with day passes going for $15 or weekend passes for $25. Kids under 16 get in free. Lounge 2.0 What: Gaming, Meetup When: Friday, May 26th at 5:00 p.m. Where: GlitchHQ Another event this week at GlitchHQ, Lounge 2.0 is a get-together for people who are passionate about games and want to spend their Friday nights in like-minded company. Glitch offers consoles, PC stations, tabletop, and digital games. If you’re passionate about a game, bring it to share with the community. Friday Night Magic What: Gaming, Meetup When: Friday, May 26th at 6:00 p.m. Where: Mischief Toy Store Mischief Toy Store in St. Paul invites you to experience some Magic with them this Friday night. Entry is $5; all players will receive prizes. This weekly event is limited to 24 players and typically lasts until about 9:00 p.m. All skill levels are welcome. Ramsey After Dark: Victorian Secrets What: Educational, Nightlife When: Friday, May 26th at 7:00 p.m. Where: Alexander Ramsey House Come to Alexander Ramsey House for the next Ramsey After Dark, a deep dive into the secrets that proper Victorian society would have preferred to kept quiet. Learn about what was taboo for people in Victorian society, such as mental illness, addiction, and birth control, while learning some hidden truths about the Ramsey family. This is an 18+ event, and tickets are $10. The World's Most Dangerous Polka Band What: Nightlife When: Friday, May 26th at 7:30 p.m. Where: Can Can Wonderland You may mourn for Nye's Polonaise Room, but one of the best parts of Nye's lives on in the World's Most Dangerous Polka Band, and will be bringing that little bit of old-world danger to Can Can Wonderland for a Friday night of fun. Tsuinishi Anime Club What: Meetup, Anime When: Friday, May 26th at 8:30 p.m. Where: Geek Partnership Society Anime Twin Cities has joined forces with the Geek Partnership Society “to bring a little bit of fun to you on the second and fourth Fridays of each month with this cosponsored anime club.” The group will show various anime movies and series. The Running Man What: Screening, Movies When: Friday, May 26th at 9:00 p.m. Where: Parkway Theater While reality TV fans take in the first episode of a new Bachelorette, you can come to the Parkway Theater to see how far reality TV could go with a rare 35mm print of The Running Man. This is a classic Arnold Schwarzenegger film with a hilariously violent image of the near future. Vilification Tennis Goes to the Movies What: Comedy When: Friday, May 26th at 10:00 p.m. Where: Bryant Lake Bowl Theater See local insult comedy troupe Vilification Tennis take on your favorite icons of the silver screen. This is an adults-only comedy special that will skewer movies and should leave the audience in stitches. Tickets are $15 at the door or $12 in advance. Level Up! What: Sports & Fitness When: Saturday, May 27thth at 8:30 a.m. Where: YQdio After gaining all of this experience with various yoga poses, you’ve earned the right to level up and dive deeper into familiar poses, and even learn new feats (poses). There is a $15 charge for this advanced class. Saturday Morning Cartoons What: Sports & Fitness, Meetup When: Saturday, May 27th at 10:00 a.m. Where: YQdio Another event held at the YogaQuest YQdio this week is Saturday Morning Cartoons, which features “classic (and not-so-classic) Saturday morning cartoons, plus yoga, plus the stupidest cereals in existence!” The yoga practice will consist of “some gentle wake-me-up vinyasa followed by a session of stretchy, restorative yoga, all set to cartoons, and wrapped up with a bowl of delicious technicolor goodness.” Memorial Day Weekend at Fort Snelling What: Educational, History When: Saturday, May 27th at 10:00 a.m. to Sunday, May 28th at 5:00 p.m. Where: Fort Snelling Take Memorial Day as an opportunity to connect with Minnesota history through the military lens of Fort Snelling. Hang out with costumed interpreters and learn the many stories behind this historic fort, including those of Dred and Harriet Scott. Enjoy talks, a scavenger hunt, and a "living timeline," featuring costumed interpreters representing the different eras of US military history. Tickets start at $12, with a variety of discounts available. Transvestite Soup Presents The Rocky Horror Picture Show What: Screenings, Theater & Comedy When: Saturday, May 27th at 11:59 p.m. Where: Uptown Theatre At 11:59 p.m. on the last Saturday of every month, the Uptown Theatre screens The Rocky Horror Picture Show, “the longest running midnight movie of all time.” Transvestite Soup is the Twin Cities’ “shadow cast” for the showings, performing for your pleasure as part of the cult classic’s well-established tradition. Shieldmaiden Sundays What: Gaming, Meetup When: Sunday, May 28th at 12:00 p.m. Where: Source Comics and Games Shieldmaiden Sundays is a new dedicated space for female nerds and geeks at the Source. This will be a recurring weekly event providing a space for women to play games, chat about comics, cosplay, or just enjoy the company of other geeks. Gender Jam What: Meetup, Comics, Gaming When: Sunday, May 28th at 12:30 p.m. Where: The Exchange Gender Jam is a safe social meetup for trans, gender-nonconforming, and questioning youth hosted at the Exchange for video games, board games, snacks, and togetherness. Permission slips are needed for attendees under the age of 18; see the event on the Twin Cities Geek Community Calendar (which you can reach by clicking the event title above) or visit Gender Jam on Facebook for more information. Gender Jam will be heading to the Webber Natural Swimming Pool in North Minneapolis for this week. Meet up at the Exchange for a ride over. So, which of these events will you be attending?
